Nearly 40 years ago I had just got my BHSAI and went to my first job at a private house as groom. The horses had been turned away for the summer and one horse was turned away to see if it came sound ,it had ringbone. The vet came out and said there was no hope and the slaughterman was arranged.
The lady of the house decided to go to London for the day and told the gardener to have it done , they thought I was too young at 18 to see to it.I was sent to creosote the fencing. I asked the gardener to call me as I thought I should know what to expect next time.
I was 2 fields away and saw the lorry arrive ,it was a long walk back but I set off.In the distance I could see the wrong horse being led out, it was the lady's favorite hunter . I started to run and shout but to no avail, her best hunter was shot and by the time I got to them it was all over.
I can never forget the gardeners face when he realised and he had to tell her on her return.
The other horse was shot the next day and I blame the lady for leaving it to him .He never wanted the job and didn't really know the horses . To him one bay looked like another.

What is the worst mistake you have seen?

Worst mistake I have seen...a beautiful palomino stallion being flogged to death at a feria because the owner was a numpty and a prat. I stood in front of him at one point, pointing out the fact he had blood dripping down his face and was hissed at for being soft and that the horse needed to learn a lesson

Another awful one i am afraid. I used to be the rider for a stud it was the spring and the young two year olds had to be moved [ they were colts and they had to go to the other side of the farm across a quiet country road]
I had been working in the school most of the day and came around the corner after this had been going on for about two hours. They were using one of the more handled colts, a real sweetie to give the less handled ones a lead. He had been to and fro for the whole two hours and it was the last trip. For some reason he decided he had had enough and started to go backwards. Tempers were frayed and i was trying to say lets all just take a break when the girl holding the lead rope of the 'lead' horse yanked it down really hard. The poor animal reared up, actually he backflipped as a result of the vicious pull. He hit the ground with his head. It was the most awful sound he lay on the ground for a second motionless and the girl was yelling at him that he deserved it and now he had winded himself but in actual fact, a further 30secons later he began to bleed from his ears nose and mouth. He was dead.
I will never forget it. I was so upset and angry and for me this was something i could never forgive.
I took my things and never went back again.

Taking my horse's rug off in the field without a headcollar and her running off just as I pulled it off her back only to get the fillet string wrapped up in her tail. She panicked and galloped off, she fell broke her ribs and then broke her back leg. I am sorry to say that she was still running round on three legs with the broken leg hanging by a tendon. The worst day of my life and the most sickening incident.
