Currently running a 'Jumping a Course' series of lessons for the RS. Had 7riders this morning, all on reasonably good ponies, most of whom have taken part in all the previous sessions and jumped a couple of small courses. I'd built them a little course of fences - nothing bigger than 2'2, most jumps about 1'6 ish. Here are the things *I* learned this morning

NB These are all different horses here

1) MYTH: related distances are easier than island fences (theory being horse is set up to jump the second part on a good stride).
TRUTH: related distances are easier than island fences ONLY if horse is kept straight.
RESULT horse and rider jump 2 stride related distance perfectly 4 times. 5th time, horse wobbles and runs out at second part. Rider falls off into wall and hurts herself to the point where she remounts but is unable to trot or canter again.

2) MYTH: An expereinced 17yr old ex PC pony, that has jumped the palisades numerous times before will also jump them today.
TRUTH: horse will give every appearance of being happy to jump then stop suddently
RESULT: rider falls over horse's head onto jump, bravely remounts and horse then refuses a second time (rider stays on this time). In the end *I* get on and have to basically smack him over which is not something you really want to have to do infront of clients.

3) MYTH: if rider has jumped fence perfectly 3 times she can jump it a 4th time
TRUTH: sometimes riders appear to fall off for no reason
RESULT: rider jumps fence absolutely perfectly, off a nice stride, from a good turn then, with no visable cause, falls over horse's shoulder. Rider remounts but refuses to jump again.

4) MYTH: if horse has jumped happily over palisades and planks, he will also (if ridden sensibly) jump over a small hanging filler.
TRUTH: horse will jump about 6' over small hanging filler
RESULT: rider stayed on this time but OMG I have never seen anything like it. Horse basically appeared to rear up and then jump over the jump on his back legs only... and he'd not *looked* at a fence before this.

5) MYTH: if you jump everything individually and then put it together as a course bit by bit, your ponies will jump sensibly when you do the entire thing at the end.
TRUTH: your pony will jump fine all through the lesson, then run out at the second fence when he is doing the course.
RESULT: this was my 'related distance' fall where the pony just nipped out to the side, rider lost her balance and fell into the wall.

Seven people... three falls... and two of those falls were off my most experienced, reliable ponies.

. Felt like the worst instructor in the world.

Fortunately my boss came out after and gave me some advice and talked it through with me but it was just the worst morning. It is so hard to teach people and help them progress without putting them in any sort of "risky" situation. Plus none of the falls happened at what I would consider 'difficult' fences... [SWW runs and hides under the duvet for the rest of the day]

Cookies if you got this far, just needed to 'talk' it through.

Mmmm cookies.

Did any of you see those programmes about the kings troop learning to ride? The first time they cantred most of the ride fell off! Don't worry, sounds like just one of those mornings, been in a lesson before where all 5 of us have come off, most of us in really stupid ways. Mine was so dumb i managed to leap back on before anyone noticed!

There are some days when people + horses = disaster!!

As for putting people at risk - nobody is forcing them to jump, so they must be happy to take their chances. And I'm sure it was nothing to do with your teaching, it was just one of those days! It'll all be fine next time.

Falling off is all part of riding.

I was dumped millions on times as a kid and it never did me any harm (Redmerl says while twitching)!!!!

QR

thanks all, yes looking back it is all part of riding (and teaching). I think my problem is that I always feel so dam RESPONSIBLE when they fall off.

Plus my boss says I tend to assume a greater level of abilitly in my riders to deal with problems than they actually have. So I am going to work on this.

Awww sounds like a frustrating morning....

If it makes you feel any better my hubby fll off yesterday...

He can't do much, steer, stop, start and bounce and jiggle to a sedate trot...works out ok if he rides my mare out while I take the pony...

Only someone forgot to tighten Vogues girth

*whistles and wanders off*

LMAO!
Don't worry about it, if things are going to go wrong they'll go COMPLETLY t*ts up!

Sounds like the old place I learnt to ride at, it was run by a very old fashioned couple, it was almost expected that at least one rider would fall off in each lesson, jumping was rare and when we were allowed to jump it was chaos, kids falling all of, exited ponies bouncing all over the place. Riders were expected to fall off and unless they had lost a limb they were expected back in the saddle pronto! It's shut down now, the owners long since retired and thats a shame because there's never been a better place for kids to learn about ponies and riding.

Aw mrs, hugs for a pants morning - don't worry it happens to the best of us, it just so happens all your falls happened on the one day - there is probably something in the air or a full moon is due!!! X

I'd like to think that we are a rather health and safety aware riding school... there are other places in the area which seem to have riders off all the time but we really try and keep ours on board!! Well mostly anyway

Hopefully it was just one of those days. I had a couple of little kids this afternoon asking "can we jump today?" and I was like "no no no, we are never jumping again" LOL. I had to explain I was only joking though cos they looked gutted
wink.gif

No one else fell off today though and tomorrow is a new fresh start fingers crossed. [sips gratefully on GnTnVodka]

It sounds like you had a really well thought out and planned lesson that would allow the kids to progress well... but then these things happen and none of it need be your fault.
Tomorrow is another day!

One of those days, at least they werent in an indoor school and being dragged by the stirrup bouncing off the side wall boards - thats how I remember my early jumping lessons and Im still here!

You are doing a really good service by teaching these children and the ponies are just trying to show you up. I never believe all those theories anyway!

Take big NH hugs and keep those kiddiwinks bouncing!

Well...at least they didnt

a) get bucked off over the sandschool fence, land in a wet ditch the other side, complete with brambles and stinging nettles

b) get bolted with out of the school, and land on another clients £50k bmw....which he had got the day before, and cause a dent...

as I did when I was at a rs aged 7...all in the space of 2 weeks! !

Falling off is part of riding, dont you worry, they will be back next week for more... : )

Don't worry, sounds like you did a good job - falling off teaches them about balance quicker than 20 additional lessons

I used to feel the same if someone fell on my lessons but you can only do as much as an instructor. You do want to keep everything as safe as possible but in the same time you have to let them learn and can't control every situation.
Hope tomorrow will be better for you
