I hogged Monty's mane yesterday.................with SCISSORS!!

Half of it had rubbed off at the bottom, the top bit is always encrusted with filth from constant rolling and it is generally scurfy and gross so I hacked it off.

I thought it would be better off since he will be more comfortable so I cut it off with a view to clipping it to tidy up. Monty had other ideas and wouldn't let me near him with clippers.

At least I gave him a soothing sponge down with aloe vera but he looks ridiculous. His horsey pals will take the piss forever!!

Any idea how long it will take to grow back??

Erm.....a while

My mate accidentally hogged her TB....the clippers went out of control and she had to hog him to even it all out.

Actually...it doesnt look too bad, it kind of suits him.

PS I once did this to a shettie.....if its any consolation the mane grew back great, but she did look like a bog brush for a while

I would guess at least 6 to 9 months & you will have very bristly mane for quite a while. I managed to slice a chunk from the underside of my mares mane with the clippers. Which was great at first but when it grew up vertically it poked through her full mane & looked daft for ages!

Psssst! They hog polo ponies, a lot of whom are ex-racers!

Anywho, when I worked with carriage horses we hogged the first 6ins of thier mane (it interfears with their collar otherwise) and they had october to feb off and in that time they used to grow 6ins, not quite enough to flop over on most of them.

I hogged Little Stig when he arrived (didnt really have much choice though to be fair!) and six months on he still looks like cross between jimmy neutron and a bog brush!

6 months EEEEEK!

It doesn't look too bad at the moment. He has a long skinny neck so it makes him look a bit more in proportion. I'm just worried about the inbetween stages.

Poor old boy! Zoom will leave him for another man!!

He's not scared.....he's just a pain in the arse!

You can't notice it too much at the moment since he is a fluffy bear so i will take some pics when it starts to grow out and look really silly!

Kelly rubbed hers last winter, a six inch bald patch slap bang in the middle of a beautiful flowing silver mane. I let the rubbed bit get to about three inches then decided a trim would be the answer.

I hacked it level with scissors and tried everything to thin it, put she still had the bog brush look all through the summer. Now though, it's lovely and long again (about 8") and it's evened out.

I'd give it 4-5 months to start laying to one side again, and another 2 months for the chopped look to even out.
