Having just had a really heavy weekend moving yards, I thought it would be interesting to hear other people's stories to try and put it in perspective (currently feels like the worst experience ever).

So 3 of us (all either ill or having mobility issues) had to pack up and move one quite obliging pony. Plan was horsebox would arrive, and the rubber mats and cabinet would travel in that too (with strong people loading them). Spent 3 nights before packing stuff, cleaning things etc ready to go.

It snowed the night before, so pony couldn't stay out leaving us with a stable to empty in the morning. Drove up, found my mother stranded at bottom of lane watching other people struggling to get up the hill. We got up no trouble, left person 1 filling a wheelbarrow while I went back down with shovel and brush to see if we could clear the worst bits a bit. Total fail on that front, so after 15mins of chipping away my mum jumped in my car, we waited for the most recent attempt at the hill to fail, then headed back up ourselves. Filled my car, drove it down to my mum's car (with delays while other people got stuck), then transferred load over and headed back up (more delay). Loaded car a second time, then horsebox called to say they were at bottom of lane but couldn't risk getting up as everyone else sliding about had compacted it so much that if they got stuck they'd be totally stuck, so had to walk pony down lane. Person 1 started slowly down the lane with an extremely unimpressed pony in a stable rug (all others were packed), we followed with the load of stuff and a haynet hanging out of the window. Cue more waiting for ages while other people got unstuck/rescued (the yard owner did go out with the tractor to clear it, and grit, but didn't make much difference). Horsebox people met us in lane and took over pony walking, so got down to the end of the lane quickly. Had to boot up in middle of icy lane, then load onto lorry parked on road, luckily no issues. I then had to wait my chance to go back up a 4th time and retrieve my wheelbarrow, and ask people to keep an eye on my stuff until I got back for it in the next day or so.
No problems with travelling/arriving so at least that went ok.
Next day went back up, snow mostly away apart from some drifts (why couldn't that have been Saturday?!) and managed to heave the rubber mats into the car. Just about on our knees at the other end, but still had to muck out etc. The amount of sugar consumed was scary (2 of us are diabetic, and one does take hypos).
Still to put the rubber mats down but figured that could wait until we've recovered.

To finish off the weekend, my mum pranged her car against a stationary object, causing the front panel to come half off, and the wind slammed my car door into a car in a car park causing the wing mirror to come appart (luckily the occupant's friend got it back together and it was fine). And the downstairs flat has a leak so today the flat's being pulled apart looking for the leak (I managed to dodge the heavy lifting for that though!)

I am sure there are far worse moving day stories, which mine will pale in comparison next to!

Sounds traumatic!!!

Glad you got moved in the end though!

Last time I moved (5 horses) I conveniently went on holiday and left it up too mum lol

Have to move again soon as my work is being sold! So not only my own 5 to move but 15!

Wow you obviously in need of moving! Glad went ok in the end.
I am worried about moving this Thursday as drive still snowy- hoping it thaws quickly so i can go but if it doesn't i won't be rushing!

If the horsebox had said they couldn't make it, I'd have stayed put, begged some hay from someone and bought more bedding. But the horsebox was on it's way, and after all the effort spent scrubbing mats clean etc I didn't want to delay if I didn't have to. The roads were fine other than our lane, so I wasn't worried about the actual travelling. Think that's the first time that the lane has ended up so difficult to get up/down.

Dizzydancer fingers crossed for Thursday, hope it's thawed enough for you to move easily.

flump, the idea of moving 5 horses is scary, let alone 15! I think I'd be searching for some professional horse-moving company to do that, including all the packing of equipment!

Now I just need my pony to settle down, he was acting like a fiery charger coming in from the field yesterday, which is quite comical in a 14hh Highland!
