Would a dealer take her back after a year?

Ive had my pony for a year now, bought from a dealer in scotland (not naming names). She was fine for the first 4 months and then had a lot of time off due to various things, weather, skin condition etc. When she came back to work she began to buck and rear, and now i cant even get on her without her rearing straight up. She has been to glasgow and edinburgh vet schools and been diagnoised with low grade lameness and we think this is due to a spavin in the hocks, She has had 2 courses of cortizone and adequin (sp?) injections and the vet says she is sound. However the physio still thinks she is in pain, and when lunged with side reins she goes slightly lame in the inside hind. We have spent thousands of pounds on her (thank god for insurance) and just have had constant disappointment as nothing seems to work. Even with a month off to chill and rest in a field she still reared as soon as i got on her. She is only five so we think that the only thing to do is to reschool her from scratch and try and show her that work is not painful, as we think the rearing is anticipation of pain. So my question is do you think we would have any comeback on the dealer or would they buy her back from us? She was 5 stage vetted when we got her.

Sorry its long but am at wits end and just having no fun at all, especially as she was bought as my other pony was off for 2 years with tendon problems, so she is the second one in a row who hasnt worked out!

Thanks for reading xx

Sorry to hear of your troubles but no, I don't think the dealer would take the pony back after a year. Don't give up though, espcially as she's only 5. Can you send her to a sympathetic professional to be re-schooled?

Binky01- vetting came up fine, only thing pointed out was very wide action behind, but the vet said that was good and an example of power and athleticness.

And no, have seen her out at shows but she has completly blanked me, never smiled or asked how we were doing :(

If she was fine for the first 4 months i don't see why the dealer would take her back or you would have any come back to the dealer.
Sorry

I honestly dont think after that amount of time you would - you had a 5 stage vetting done when I presume you were happy with as you did purchase the pony and the fact that the pony was fine for the first 4 months. If the lameness and bad behaviour happened in the for 6 weeks of sale, then perhaps so. To be fair, anything could happen to a pony in a year so I think you need to cut your losses on this pony as she doesnt sound sale-able if she is still in pain.

Probaby not as she was fine for the first 4 months. It just sounds like you have had unfortunate luck with this horse :( :(.

My friend got a horse from a dealer but it wasn't right staight from the beginning. It would b fine but then go absolutely mental for no reason, ridden or in the stable it would just freak out and then be fine again. He was so unpredictable he was dangerous.

They kept him for about a yr and spent thousands on vets but nothing could be found. In the end the dealer did take him back and did a part ex deal for them on another horse.

With my friends case though 1. They complained about horse right from the beginning. 2. They had been regular customer of dealer and 3. They still had to pay dealer a bit to get the new horse.

It was good of my friends dealer to accept part of the responisibilty but then horse was sold to them with this problem.

I think you will have to carry on I'm afraid :(. I would try to get to the bottom of the pain issues and then if horse still not right think again about wether it would suit a different home/turned away or pts.

Sorry though, it does sound like u have had an awful time :(

Ditto this sadly.

Sorry you've had such an awful time of it, but no I'm afraid I don't think the dealer would take her back for you. She passed a 5 stage vetting, everyone was happy about her and she was fine for the first 4 months. Anything can happen to a horse in a year. If this had happened in the first couple of months then the dealer may have taken her back, however a year is too long I'm afraid. I think you may have to carry on with her and I hope you have some luck with her.

it might be worth asking them...but i would be suprised if they agreed TBH...as the others have said, she was fine for 4 months, so i don't think the dealer has any obligation to take her back- they might offer to part ex her for something new but i would expect that you'd have to pay quite a bit on top of that... i'd try sending her away to be professionally rebroken... and if that didn't work then i think you'd have to consider PTS.... :(

I realise that you have had some very well-qualified vets look at your horse but I would try to find another vet who would look from a different POV. My vet does acupuncture and with 4 months off and a course of acu, she has come right from back problems (which we think could have been long-standing but intermittent). Other vets in the area prescribe rest and bute and many horses are still as bad as ever to ride.
I am a little concerned that you are considering passing this horse back to the dealer without getting to the bottom of the pain issue, which it probably developed with you. I do sympathise with you though, as I realise that you are probably young and not having much luck recently. Unfortunately, you are having to come to terms with the ups and downs of horses early in your life with them.

Richard Maxwell was talking about this kind of behaviour on his Horse Hero Blog. He said he's had good success with a horse that was rearing etc. It might be worth contacting him and asking for help/advice. Could be money well spent.
