would a hackamore suit my horse?

i'm having some problems bitting my horse, a 16.2hh TB mare. i've tried a pelham and a dutch gag and she doesn't like either and was wondering whether to try a hackamore?

you can't really steer her with your hands at all, everything has to be done with seat and legs, reins are just brakes with her and they don't work! the reason i was thinking about a hackamore is when i lunge her in a bridle, she is really naughty. she will pull away from you very hard and take all day to stop. however when you lunge her in a cavesson, where the point of control is on the front of her nose, she is relaxed and obedient and will start to stretch down on the lunge.

using a snaffle is out of the question as she is fit and strong and likes to go! i am a very experienced rider with soft hands and an independent seat but have never ridden in a hackamore before.

any advice appreciated!
 
Give it a go! Can you hire one? Obviously check out your brakes in an enclosed area first. Only one way to find out. It was the making of my mare who had an occult fractured wolf tooth. She was really happy in it.
 
I would love to know how you get on I have a tb who avoids the bit .He is in a frenchlink snaffle and Ive tried a myler comfort but he doesnt like the contact and like you we have to think of brakes.

I had this problem with one of mine as a 5 year old but rather than change her bit i put her in a drop(ped) noseband and this really did help.. Have you tried anything like that?

A hackamare isnt always the answer. They can be very harsh in the wrong hands and cause damage to the horse too. Although obviously if you know what you are doing and how to use one it can be very useful.
Some horses do not respect a bitless bridle too, so thats something to bear in mind.
Like i said, they can be great but it may not be right for your horse. Trial and error..just like all biting queries in my experience.

Yes tried that -he is getting better lots consistent schooling after two bad injuries i just need to be patient.Hes only 6 so is learning his art after racing
