Probably stupid question but in late March pony came in lame like an abscess - treated as such but nothing came out. Came sound after 2 weeks but it recurred c6 weeks later. Vets nerve block to lower foot, xray and big bone cyst found. Long story short he's had a big lump of foot come away (unusual for him) and farrier asked whether it was an old abscess blow out.
Likely clutching at straws but could a deep abscess be visible in an x ray ?

Vet did say without pre lameness x rays he couldn't guarantee it was the cyst causing the trouble.

Yes. My horse went lame RH a few years ago. Thought he’d broken his pelvis it looked like it came from higher up, he wasn’t positive to hoof testers, no heat in foot so I whisked him off to vets and they xrayed. Small pocket was seen just in front of pedal bone, was told to take him home and pray for pus, if nothing came out he would need to go back in for further diagnostics as they weren’t sure it wasn’t something more sinister. Few days of poulticing and the smallest abscess blew from the coronet band.
