As you know I have an Inuit (I think!!! Cross Husky and Malamute) and Ive got obsessed with these dogs, I really want to get an Alaskan Manamute now, but Dante is 14 weeks, is it too late to get an Alaskan Malamute? Would they get on and would I have to get bitch or would two males fight? Any advice please, Ive fallen in love!

I would actually wait until your pup is older. Add another dog now and your current one might regress in his training, housebreaking etc.

As far as sexes, one of each is probably the best way to go (as long as they're fixed, obviously). Two neutered males is a good combo as well, but two females will often be scrappy with one another. There is an old saying, "Male dogs fight for breeding rights, female dogs fight for breathing rights," and it has proven true for several people I know.

I have just found some which will be ready the 1st June, which will make Dante 7 months old, do you think that will be old enough?

Again, it depends on how well your dog is doing with his training. My dog was always mellow and didn't chew etc. when she was a pup, so, had we decided to go ahead, I think we would have been fine to add another. Some people like to have a good gap between their dogs, if only because of possible vet fees incurred from having two elderly dogs.

Love Dante's name, by the way

He's doing okay, we've had him three weeks, and he is toiletting outside, and last night for the first time he didn't mess in his cage, the chewing was a problem, but we've gone back to the cage now so its back under control. They are just the most beautiful dogs ever, I almost cried seeing that one on crufts last night! Ive become obsessed!

I am sure I was recommended to wait until they are about two years old before getting another puppy. Just because by that time they have gone through the majority of their terrible teenage years and you know what it is like, rather than getting two and going through all the upheavel twice over lol

I would strongly recommend that you leave a gap before getting another pup - both these breeds can be very hard work once they hit the 'teenage 'stage (between 12 -18 months) and you may find two at once extremely difficult.

The puppy stage - although tiresome because of all the 'accidents' etc is nothing compared with what I call the 'Kevin ' stage - many breeds really try it on then and push to see just how far they can go - it's no co-incidence that most dogs in rescue are around this age ! - they DO calm down eventually but personally I would leave a gap of around 2 years between pups

I think it depends entirely on your circumstances. If you have the time to put in to two young dogs then go for it, if not don't bother.

We have 2 bitches that are less than a year apart in age and that wasn't a problem. The only thing I strongly would advise against is having two from the same litter!! Though you're not on about that any way.

Going with males and females I don't think it makes much difference. I have 3 entire males, 2 of which are stud dogs and 7 bitches and they live together no probs - although before everybody shoots me down they are obviously seperated when one's in season!!!!

The GWP is nearly 12, the HWV are 10, 6 (x2) 3 (x2 though one's nearly 4) and a 2yr old, the JRTs are 1, nearly 3 and nearly 6.

Completely off topic, but i thought a Malamute x Husky, is a Huskamute, not that this is a recognised breed yet!

I have a Malamute puppy and could not imagine having the time. Like someone else said they are very time consuming. I can not imagine having another one with him!

Another vote here for waiting till your present pup is adult and trained before getting more trouble

I know its not what you want to hear but it is better in the long run for the dogs
