Would anyone buy this horse - and any price suggestions??

15.3hh mare - TB / ID. Very pretty face. She has a bone spavin off hind that has completely fused and she's sound, but vet has advised against jumping. Hacks alone off-road, but company recommended for traffic as she can be quite spooky. Well schooled (lesson every week). Has competed in fun shows, but can be quite unpredictable so doesn't always do herself justice. Big personality, will test you and see how far she can push you. Needs a firm hand, but kindness as can be a bit of a handful. Would probably suit someone looking to have a bit of fun and hack. Owner thinking of selling her to get a horse that can jump, but is not sure that she would attract any interest, or how much to charge for her. Any advice gratefully received.

i think you would get some interest in her, i would be interested if i had some pennies but just brought 3 new broodmares. the problem you may find is people looking for something so just hacking may not be experinced to handle her. i dont think she would be worth much though max 1000
 
I would have said about £1000 - £1200 seeing as she cant jump. I wouldnt have said rule her out completely, but you need to be certain you are never going to want to jump her, or indeed do any kind of 'fast' work which could cause her injury to affect her. Sounds a wee bit quirky too, so be certain you are happy to have to fight with her when she's in a mood!
 
You haven't put an age on post.If you sell her remember she may go from home to home if she is not easy .You would not get much for her ,maybe you could loan her then you can make sure she has a dignified end.

I've just sold something similar in character to what you've said only a 16 hh gelding 6 y.o. and without the bone spavin but with a shortened tendon, so again can't really jump. He went for £1200, in the spring possibly could of pushed for a bit more, was also TBxID. Good luck, hope you find a good home for her.

I have a 14yr old schoolmaster that I have just put on loan to a lady who just wants to hack. He has an old injury which means he is not allowed to jump anymore. I didn't want to sell him and wonder if he would be passed on to someone else who was not told of his limitations.

As someone else said, if she can only hack and is a handful, you might find it difficult to rehome her. It took me 18 months of full livery to find someone willing to accept my horses limits, and he is 110% at everything.

I assume this is your horse, so if memory serves me correct, she would be about 13yrs and didn't you post a couple of weeks ago to say she 'bombs off in canter on left rein and is difficult to get to canter on that rein too'???? These would both suggest there may still be some lameness issues, thus she will probably not pass a vetting. Given that she is not a novice ride, would be up to dressage till her canter is sorted, can't jump and not an ideal hacking horse as advisable to have company on roads. Not a lot. £500

The problem you have is more experienced rider will probably want to do mare than just hack and she sound too much of a ride for a novice who just wants to plod round hacking.

Her brood mare potential is also limited as I for one would not choose to breed from a mare with issues and of cross breeding (I assume also with no papers), when there are so many nice mares out there.

i dont think she would be suitable to aim at the broodmare market, especially if she has no breed papers.

it also sounds like (if it is the correct horse) that there are still some underlying pain issues. which if this is the case its not fair to sell her, she may well end up in the wrong hands maybe at a dealers being sold with no problems
 
Obviously owner would ensure there were no underlying problems before even thinking of selling her and if any were discovered, appropriate arrangements would be made for her continuing care. What we were trying to ascertain really, is whether there are competent, capable and confident riders who just want to hack, rather than compete / jump etc

I think there are, but they are VERY hard to find and will not want to part with much or any money.

Sorry, but just having been through this myself, it is a long and hard road!

I'm a competent and capable rider, but not overly confident. Shame, as we are looking for a straightforward uncomplicated horse for mainly hacking at the moment...
