Morning all. The bloody mutt has another ear infection. Treating it as per usual.

Vet has mentioned before that it may be a food allergy, however both vet and I have agreed that its highly unlikely to be food as she doesnt have a single other symptom - and its only ever her right ear!

So this post has two questions in it - firstly, how do you guys treat ear infections? I'm not all that thrilled with waiting for the infection to come and then whacking drops in it - nervous she'd become resistant to the drops (Otomax?). But the option the vet gave me for preventing it is the minute we see redness, spray her in the ear with a steroid spray. So do you guys use/know of people using perhaps a daily light cleanser? Will run past vet first but want to go to him armed with suggestions!

Secondly, does it sound like a food allergy to you? And if so, she's already on a "non-allergenic" food (Symply Salmon and Potato). So how the hell do you go about ruling out what it could be? She's not great with rich foods and hunks of meat make her a bit dodgy tummy-ed.

All opinions appreciated!

xx

Is it an infection or an infestation? Could be earmites in which case cleaning and using the Otodex drops should deal with it.

Yeast infection. Smells like it, trust me! Also last time I took her in the vet took a swab (in case it was more severe bacterial infection) and he said it was just yeast.

I use Epiotic, which is a great product, once a week if he is looking itcy or smelly down his lugs. Also normally impacts on one ear worse than the other.
Also keep him on a low protein food as he is a very 'hot' dog, if you see what I mean.
I don't think food is the sole cause of his problems but it did not help when he was on a higher protein food with wheat in.
I also hold a lot of store in keeping the area as dry as possible. On a rainy day or even a damp or mizzly day, I will keep him in his night pen, which has a roof as well as his kennel and if he gets really bad he can come in the house.

Thornit powder is great for parasites or allergies to parasites.

I got mine from Petmeds on recommendation from the lovely Llyncwyn on here - one thing I will say is that I have a few bits of clothes that still smell of it :o and I find it quite harsh and only really use it in emergencies to dry the area out. Not sure if it diminishes it's power but I have actually mixed it into a little paste with aloe vera gel before now :o
My dog is such a poof.. :p

Thats what I'm nervous of, putting something in there that is actually quite harsh and could do more damage! I was wondering whether there was something really mild, like a very mild disinfectant?

You're right, it has got a very distinctive odour! I've just ordered some stuff from the US called Zymox Otic, as one of my lurchers has a recurring ear problem, will give it a whirl & let you bods know if its any good:)

See if your vet will give you Epiotic - it's the only one that has worked for us.
Squirt it in, hold ear steady for a bit then dog shakes it out, no dunging about or messing around with cotton wool, making the situation worse, like can happen with some.
