My mare can be quite lazy. Some days she will do anything to get out of work. I have tried lots of different things to liven her up such as different schooling methods, changes in diet etc but no joy.

It has been suggested to me that getting her out hunting might do her the world of good and just generally liven her up. Any thoughts on this?

Also, if the answer is yes what are the basics needed by horse and rider before we are ready? Neither of has hunted before and I'm scared of dying! :-0

Probably yes - my best hunter would be a nightmare if he wasn't a hunter. At home, he's a kick along slug who will haul himself over 2'9 fences and lands in trot (or walk!) In the school, I struggle to get canter.

Hunting, he's in a Waterford gag, jumps hedges for fun and never wants to go home. He watches hounds work and is a delightful, perky horse :-)

You both need to be fit enough - if you search this forum there are loads of threads on how to start, what to wear and generally how it all works

Best thing to do is to find someone local to buddy up with and then you've got some moral support and someone to hack back to the box with! If you were closer, you would have been very welcome to come out with me :-)

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies. I guess I will have scoot through the threads and find out some basics.

I htink my local hunts would with be Atherstone or the Warwickshire. I noticed that Atherstone do a "pre hunting clinic" and Warwickshire a "new comers day"

Anybody here a member or had any experience of either?

Thanks

Yes, she'll probably be fabby out hunting. My slug of a cob was.

But it's unlikely to affect her day to day laziness once the buzz has worn off, if she's naturally lazy and laidback. Mine would be amazing to hunt ( flew round and kept up with the big horses) then two days later pretend he could barely manage a steady trot round the school.
