Just browsing equi-ads and noticed some-one who's not too far from me asking for some-one to exercise their 17hh gelding (it gives no other details, looks like a lw type)
I'm used to a 15.2hh welsh coblet, who is very much a pony on legs! Just wondering if I'd be over-horsing myself? I'm 5ft 6 and under 10 stone. I've ridden 16.3hh before fine (tho I did need a mounting block, I've only got little legs) so guessing it would be more of a shock to the system??!

I would go give it a try, I currently ride a 17.2hh tb x who hunts in the winter so can be strong and take a hold, I'm 5ft3 and 9 stone

My last share horse was 15.1hh so it was a bit of a shock riding a horse so big, but I got used to it. In the past I've ridden anything up to an 18.2hh shire x tb, she was lots of fun

Mmm, might e-mail, can't hurt after all.
Ad is quite vague- just says some-one wanted to look after, ride & compete horse. Plus side is no costs involved & from picture looks like they have a menage. Hmmmm.

Generally, I don't think over-horsed means they are big and you are small, more that the horse exceeds your capabilities as a rider. Whether it is 14.2 or 17.2, if you can't handle it you would be over-horsed, if you can then there's no problem.

Go for it if you fancy it.

I meant over-horsed in both senses- his height vs mine but also in terms of jumping from a welshy to something that looks more tb like as they both require different ways of riding (or so I've found previously) and I think jumping between the two might be...interesting?
Ah well, have e-mailed them to ask for more info, can make an initial decision based on that.

I think Archiesmummy sums it up perfectly.

And Chaps - any two horses will require different ways of riding, all depending on how it's been trained/how much work/who it's been ridden by et. etc. in the past. The difference riding between a 15 hand horse and a 17 hand horse could actually be much less than the difference between two 15 hand horses. They're all individuals!

I think you should get in touch and find out some more - and hopefully go for a try.

I'm 5'6" and 9 or 9 1/2 stone, and I feel quite comfortable on 17hh+, even though my boy is only 14.1. Overhorsedness has more to do with your abilities as a rider than your size, as others have said!

I'm 5'7 and my horse is a full up 18.1 and I manage fine.
Some people my height ride 14hh ponies and feel too small on horses, I can't get on anything under 16.2 as I just feel too leggy! I think it's just a matter of personal preference, go along, try them out and see how you feel.

Depends on if you can control it easily and there is only one way to find out....

I used to ride a 17.2hh wb x tb and found him slightly easier to control than the 16.2hh tb im currently riding. like a majority have already said, there is only one way to find out.

na i dont think you'd be over horsing yourself so long as you can control him you can only go and try him, i used to work in an equestrian centre and hadto ride anything from 14hh upwards to 17.2 i'm 5ft7
my workmate is very small and slight 5ft 3 and she owns a 17.2hh dutch warmblood she is like a pea on a drum but they just click
