I am trying to sell my horse box at the minute, it seems to be the correct price (looking what else is out there) but I just havent really had anybody interested, Ive dropped the price a bit but still nothing. It only has about 6 weeks of MOT left on it and is an older box (D reg but drives great). Do you think the fact it doesnt have much MOT is putting people off and would it be worth MOTing it? I am just very poor having replace the box already and dont really have the spare cash so dont really want to MOT it to take an offer even lower again than what the box was advertised at. I have had a few people offer 500 less again (over email) would it just be better to sell it to them rather than MOT it? Decisions Decisions help much appreciated!

I'm horsebox shopping at the mo

When I look at ads that have v little MOT left it makes me think there's loads of work to be done and they want shot of it before it needs doing...

Just a thought...

I wouldnt by a lorry that hadn't got a long MOT, I think people may be put off thinking that it wont pass and thats why you are selling.

If I wanted your lorry, I would check online to see what advisories were given at the last MOT, this would give me an idea of how tough it was to get it through last time. But Yes, I would want to see at least 6 months MOT on any vehicle, or I would ask for it to have a new MOT done before I would buy it. If someone has offered you £500 less, you should take the money. Everyone expects to get some money off a vehicle, especially so, if the MOT is short.

Ditto this! I'm looking too and would much prefer a long MOT as by the time I have bought the lorry I can't afford to pay for a load of work on it :)

Bite the hand off the person who offered you £500 less. It could cost you several thousand to get a lorry of that age through the MOT, no matter how easily it passed last time. My friend's lorry sailed through one year and was an economic write-off with trust the next.

I would not buy a box without at least 6 months MOT, it looks too much like the owner knows it will fail and wants to dump it before it does.

I don't think it would necessarily cost thousands to get a D reg through an MOT, it obviously depends on the state of the vehicle but I do agree I wouldn't buy a lorry without at least 6 months MOT.

I have a D reg lorry, bought it with a 10 months MOT and it has cost me between £700-£1000 to put through it's MOT again every year for the last 4 years. I hate to imagine how much it will cost this year! So yes, MOT is advisable or take the £500 less offer before they change their minds!

it depends of the box itself as to how much it will cost, i know someone with an old y reg (1983?) and it sails through every year needing only the odd wiper blade or something like that! never brakes down or gives them any probs, always starts and does long journeys very happily

Sounds interesting Big Red, how do you actually check that online? Thanks for the suggestions guys

could Could COULD

I wrote COULD, not would.

Lorries can cost thousands to get through the MOT. I know because I've paid the bills. Of course it might not, but if you are selling a lorry worth , say £3000 and have an offer of £2500 accept it - your next MOT bill COULD be more than the lorry is worth.

ps rust not trust in my first post of course :) I don't think lorries fail their MOT on trust

Do you think it would pass an mot? if yes then take it for a mot which would cost you about £100 or except a lower offer to get rid, but I dont think you would find many people to buy with only a short time left on MOT!

I'd echo others, would want to see a reasonable length of time on the MOT if buying as would be worried that the cost to get it passed would be high (in fact I've learnt to expect a large bill and then just be pleasantly surprised when it's not eye watering!!) and that I'd be having to pay out £xxx just a few weeks after purchase.

£500 less than asking sounds like a good offer to me if it needs plating soon. I don't think my lorry bill has ever been less that £400 for service and MOT (T reg Iveco).
