We are going to The Heathfield agricultural show on Saturday, taking Donovan.
I am thinking, I wouldnt leave him at the trailer tied up, he would be on the trailer, but would it be ok to take the partition and centre pole out and leave him so he has a bit more space? Not to travel, but while we are at the show.

I would be fine with leaving him in the trailer unattended, I couldnt manage otherwise espeically if on you own. I would just leave him as he would be as he travels as this would be what he would be used to with a haynet and he should be fine.

We will be going to and from him, so wont be left for more than prob 15 mins with haynet and water.

I wouldn't leave a horse either tied or in a trailer unless I was within sight :)

You're not allowed to leave an unattended horse tied to a trailer or box at any affiliated show/county etc.

And no, I wouldn't leave unattended in the box either.

Cross tie him and he should be fine.

I leave my horse in the trailer without someone watching over her constantly, how do people think people compete one their own without leaving their horse on the trailer/box whilst they go off to the secretary, collect score sheets etc.

I would certainly not leave unattended tied to the outside of a trailer or box. That would be reckless as well as, as Amymay says, not allowed at affiliated events. Inside a trailer not a problem provided as Benson21 has said for not for huge lenghts of time. How else would you, if on your own, go to the loo, go to the secretary etc? Especially at bigger events where the parking is often a hike from anything useful. Or if you were competing two horses, one stays on whilst the other is competing.

Blimey, all the people who would never leave a horse inside a box/trailer on its own, please don't visit the lorry park of any competitions near you - you'll have heart failure!

Benson - he'll be fine left in the trailer, it's really not an issue. I arrive, drop the ramp, check horse is ok then go off to get my number, walk the courses etc - often gone for an hour! It's a complete non-issue IMO, I compete on my own and if I couldn't leave him alone then how would I cope?!

Yes that's normally safe. I wouldn't bother taking the partition out though, just leave it how he travels. Also don't leave him if he's very unsettled and check on him regularly.

As others have said, its not safe to leave horses tied up outside at shows unattended. :)

Couldnt agree more! I often compete on my own as well, and used to regularly take more than one horse, never had a problem leaving them on the box.
I would just not like to leave them outside!

Just how does one take a horse to an event in the box on their own and NEVER leave them unattended? Do these people never need the loo?????

I don't like to leave mine for long but sometimes you really do need to nip off for ten minutes!

So do you leave the ramp open for the time you are away?

Exactly what I was getting at really, ok maybe out of sight was unreasonable.

Same here. Its something you train your horses for, doing it for progressively longer and longer periods. Yes theres a small chance there might be an accident, but theres a small chance they could have an accident in the field. I couldn't walk the course or enter if I didn't leave my horses in the box alone. Fellow competitors will be alerted if anything goes wrong, its not as if you're leaving them in the middle of a field alone! My young horse now stands for a couple of hours quite happily while the other one is out competing and vice versa.

As for tieing up outside, they're probably happier doing this but the risk of them untieing themselves and getting loose is too high. Its also banned at many shows.

I have to say I've assumed that Benson is taking her youngster - rather than an an adult horse. Which is why I've said I wouldn't leave unattended.

He will be fine, as long as he is happy in the trailer and you come back and check on him then there wont be a problem. If your really worried then ask the person next to you to make sure he is ok but people event 2 horses on their own so there is always a horse on the lorry/trailer alone.

Personally I'd drop the ramp when you arrive to get some air in but put it back up when you go, its just one less thing to worry about.

In a lorry, yes. In a trailer, no I wouldn't - but I would open the top front door.

And yes, I'd do it with a youngster too. It's totally not an issue. In the past I've stuck my mobile number on the side of the lorry, but I don't bother any more. If anything happens, someone will alert the secretary and you'll hear your numberplate over the tannoy anyway.

I always throw mine up on it when they're not needed. No need to be out all day with them!

And with babies.... shouldn't make a difference to it if they're half sensible anyway, especially as they've already travelled there in the box on their own.

My little lad is happy as larry stood on his own in a box...he was in there for quite a few shots bless him! :) I don't have any issues leaving him wherever, he's not silly about it. Regularly gets tied to any random tree out hacking when we stop for a drink or a rest lol!
