Would like to take my dog to yard but problems...

I've been living with mum since my dad passed away last year we got a dog to help cheer her up a few months later. Mum is just about to start a new job 3 days a week and so I would like to consider taking the dog with me to the stables because i'll likely be up there for at least 8-10 hours when i'm there.
Problems...
1) The yard dog can be pretty vicious towards other dogs and I think mum would really worry our Poppy would be hurt - I think that she can hold her own and they would get used to each other if they had a chance. The YO got a new puppy recently and he and the original yard dog have already settled with each other.
2) There is no gate at the bottom of the road that can be closed during the day because of a high amount of traffic coming and going from the yard premises. The yard road leads on to a busy back road and even though Poppy doesn't usually go far from me i'd worry she'd take herself off exploring and get hit by a car.
Obviously I can't keep an eye on her at all times because i'll be busy a lot and I can't keep her on a lead with the yard dog about because then she feels trapped and that would make the situation worse as I know from experience.
Has anyone ever had a situation similar or can you suggest anything please?

Ha ha! Yeah that would help with the worrying but not so good for poor puppy's bladder! :p P.s she's actually 2 years old now but we still call her puppy :D
 
First make sure that your YO doesn't mind you taking the dog, don't just assume it'll be alright.

Personally, if the security there is nil then I wouldn't even attempt it for the reasons given above, just not worth the hassle IMO.

Yeah I would have done that :rolleyes::p I was just thinking out loud at the moment, it would be ideal if it worked out. Maybe if I took her up when I wasn't working so see how she got on (after hours). She will always come back when called so if i'm watching her to start with there is no danger she'd run out on the road.

Do you think she'd learn that she wasn't allowed to go past a certain point down the yard road kind of thing? :confused:
 
Perhaps you could get her one of those indoor kennel/cages and put if somewhere warm. You could then get her out when you had time to watch her but she would be safe when you are busy. She would still have company and be able to see things going on.
 
Why not pop her in an empty stable (if there is one?) at the times when you are busy & cannot watch over her?
I used to do this with mine - everyone out & about whilst feeding, then into a stable whilst turning out, then free again whilst mucking out. Shut in again whilst riding & out again during breaks. At least you are able to then give her a run a lunchtime etc without going home.
Mine would snuggle down in the straw (or into an old stable rug) for a long snooze & quickly got used to the routines :)

Thank you both those are brilliant ideas! removes the worry but allows me to keep the dog with me :D Might have to see if the YO would be happy with that now...
 
Mine go back into their crate in the car when I am busy and out in between times. Summer is trickier so have to think of the times when I am up so can find shade and leave all the dogs and sun roof open. On really hot days the crate goes into the barn
