Hi I'm thinking of changing my trek times and prices. Currently I do 1 or 2 hour treks and 20 minute pony rides, I have no set times and book people in for a time to suit them. This has worked reasonably well so far especially as beach rides fit around the tides and can also plan around weather and other peoples plans. Sometimes it gets abit chaotic though and I can end up taking out 4 treks a day with 2 people on each trek who could have all joined on 1. The other reason is alot of novices want to go on 2 hour treks which is not easy as we have to go on the beach which can be difficult with novices mainly because all the ponies want to do is eat seaweed. Also my best trek for novices takes longer than an hour when just walking and we usually end up running over time.
Therefore I am thinking of making all treks 1 1/2 hours having one in the morning at 10am and 1 at 2pm with 1/2 hour treks in between for young children or anyone just wanting a taster.
One ride a day will be a beach ride and one will be a monument ride (though obviously don't have to stick to this), I will try to keep the beach ride for experienced and the monument for novices though if end up with mixed groups then the group can split with 2 leaders so some get to go for a canter (we do this quite often anyway so it could work)

Last year I charged £15 p/h, £28 for 2 and £5 for pony ride and charged £40 for a family of 4. Have put prices up this year to £18, £30 and £6 and had no complaints so far, over easter most people booked a 2 hr ride.
Am thinking of charging £25 each or £85 family of 4 for 11/2 hr trek and £10 for 1/2 hour.

Most people who come here are familys and complete novices or children that have riding lessons at home (they are not a problem as parents used to high prices and children desperate to ride so it is the novice families I am trying to target.

Do you think I should leave it as it is or change to 1 1/2 hr treks? or do you think it is too much money and I will lose out on the novice families?

I hope this all makes sense, it does in my head but that doesn't mean anything .
Been thinking about it for a while but its a big gamble if it doesn't work out.

is there much competetion( sp) in your area. if not put your prices up. i think £25 is a good price for 1 1/2 hours

I think you are way too cheap I'm afraid. My one hour trail rides were $35 and that was for 1 hour. I know I charge in dollars and you are charging in pounds, but where cost of living is concerned, it's the same.

A more realistic price would be £40 - £50 for an hour and a half ride. We used to have a place in Devon and I would take some of my horses with me, but we'd rent horses from a trail place for the members of the family who didn't have a horse, and take our own horses for us who did. The rental of the horses (with a guide) was £40 for an hour and that was over 5 years ago!

You're underselling yourself. When people are on holiday they will spend and to be honest, 40 quid is not a lot of money for a holiday activity.

You are very cheap but if it works, it might be better than losing all your customers!!!

Your plan sounds very sensible. It's better to have set rides which the holiday makers have to work around than you being rushed off your feet & also as the system will (hopefully) be more efficient then you shouldbe able to have more people going out each day on the same or fewer amounts of rides!

What are your ponies like with grass reins? Simple solution to the seaweed issue with novice riders...

Next time I'm in Mull I'm defo coming for a trek with prices like that!

I am VERY jealous.

My family are all from Mull and I visit whenever I can as I absolutely adore the place. Due to pressures of work I have not been up for a few years, but I am hoping to come up late this year or maybe early next.

If you have rides on a Sunday, I will pay you a visit, as loch / river fishing is not allowed.

Sorry, can't help with the prices, if you are comparable with the other attractions, then that is about your only guide.

Thanks Tia, I realise I am alot cheaper than down south but compared to places such as Skye and the highlands the prices are about the same.
We just don't have the numbers of people up here to spend money and when we do they are only here for about 3 months of the year so I'm scared of driving them away by putting prices up too much. What I should do is charge those prices june to september and then be cheaper out of season but I haven't got the nerve to do that yet, though I do charge locals alot less.
The other thing is I have very little facilities, ponies all live out and all natives which keeps costs down but I'm not BHS approved etc so although fully licenced/ insured and I am qualified etc not exactly a first class equestrian centre yet, though I do have plans for the future.

I think you are very reasonable. I was quoted £45 and one place and £50 for another for an hour to an hour and a half beach ride in Devon. Needless to say, I didn't bother!

If you can cope financially at the prices you have quoted, then you should stick with it - you will get far more business than someone taking advantage of the fact that there are no beaches in Warwickshire!

Thanks everyone for your really positve answers.
Just checked out my immediate competition boat trips range from £27 to £45 for the absolute cheapest trips and wildlife tours are around £35 per person, so pony trekking still a cheaper option.
Niel where abouts are your family from?
Anyone is welcome anytime.

But you're better than all the other places

. I don't offer trail riding anymore, but did up till last Autumn and I upped my prices last year when my nearest competitor was $15 cheaper. It didn't affect my custom in the slightest as almost all of my summer clients were holiday-makers coming from wealthier areas so they didn't care how much they paid. They realised that they were paying extra for better equine care (ie. my horses only went out for one ride in any 24 hour period unlike the other place where their horses work for 7 hours a day).

You have to take into account where your customers are coming from, and if they are holiday makers, then I'd imagine a lot of them come from down south where they have greater disposable incomes.

Your idea of having off-peak and high season prices is a good one though.

I think your prices are very reasonable. If you are turning away business then you could up your prices a little, but if you are ticking along nicely and can afford to keep going at these prices, then I would stick with it.

Hiya!

I think you should go for it and put them up. You still sound very reasonable to me.
