As title really. Just wondering as my horse was nerve blocked today as he has been lame on and off (I have been turning him out and he has a real hooley so ends up in again lame- silly owner but he hates being in!) for the last 2weeks after ripping off his off fore shoe while out.

Farrier cant see anything so vet nerve blocked him tonight. he was less lame but not as sound as he came when we went through this for an abcess last year.

Have been given danilon for a week and told to do controlled excercise. i'll be lucky to maintain the control part!!

If the nerve block was injected below the fetlock (palmadigital block) it would have blocked out the back third of the hoof including back third of the sole. If the block was injected at the level of the fetlock (abaxial sesamoid block) then it would have blocked out the entire foot and sole. HOWEVER blocks are not 100% reliable and it is possible that sole pain due to bruising did not respond to the block. An improvement in the lameness of more than 50% is significant, because the sole comes under so much pressure when the foot hits the ground, especially if the ground is at all rough, it would be rare to get a 100% improvement in a lameness coming from this area.

Thank you Sam, that has answered my question more specificly then I would have hoped. He was 50% better after the block and it was below the fetlock;-) that has made me feel quite hopeful that it is just bruising.
