I have been searching for a horse for some time and I can't find anything suitable. I am considering putting off buying for another year until I qualify as a teacher. In the mean time, not riding will drive me crazy! I do not want a loan as the money could be saved to put towards my horse. Would there be a market for me exercising peoples horses for them, maybe on a weekend or the odd weekday? I am an experienced rider and have worked with all sorts of horses from breakers to eventers and county show horses. I am 5'2 and 8 stone so also fine on ponies. I can also provide at least 4 separate references and would hack, jump, school, lunge or long rein.
Would there be a market for this? Would you pay me, if so how much? To be honest I am prepared to do it for free as I just want the rides, but my Dad thinks I should be charging. I drive and have my own car so transport is not a problem. I also have rider insurance.

Why not put an ad up on your local horsey FB pages, that way you will see what feedback you get and whether there is any demand, I guess depending on your ability, if you charged a tiny amount [say travel costs] you may have some offers
I dont think Id want to pay anyone to ride my horses unless I thought there would be some benefit for the horse!!

Where are you? I have one in south oxon that needs as much exercise as possible!! Wouldn't pay you though I'm afraid

Hi,

Whilst you may not get paid you could potentially get free riding - what experience do you have? Can you compete? I'm sure there's plenty about via word of mouth that need a good rider to keep them ticking over or need a good jockey :D

I have lots of experience bringing on or reschooling. I have a fairly sticky seat and I'm not fazed by much. Used to ride for other people when I lived in Lincolnshire and got good feedback from them. I would love the opportunity to compete at any level. :)

kind of in a quandry on this, but my bottom line would probably be that if I wanted to pay someone to exercise my horse it would be in an educational sense, above a level I could competently achieve, I would look for a pro, with a significantly high level of references, word of mouth probably and a market presence (by that I mean she/he would do it as a profession and be known for doing it well). So no, I wouldnt pay for it, some may, but to be honest imo what you are looking for is a free ride dressed up with charges. If someone even approached me with that they wouldnt so much as get a free look at my horse. Sorry I dont mean to insult you, Im just stating my feelings. I know a number of pros here, they compete on their own horses, show and compete clients horses, back, school and exercise clients horse... I would pay them over someone who was looking for essentially a free ride on my horse and trying to charge me for it.

Op, if you have a proven competition record you may be able to charge. I'm looking myself to school an additional horse at the moment and tbh wouldn't dream of charging as at the end of day it will benefit me as much as the horse.

but do you have the experience of competing at a high level? The thing is that your charges must be priced according to your experience, knowledge, references and achievements. If yours are not yet 'proven' then I suspect your best avenue is riding for free for the 'proven ability' to set in. If however, you have backed some fab horses who are excelling in their sphere, have something incredibly unique to offer, or have personally ridden county winners to victory, I suspect you may be working against the tide. Especially since there are so many individuals offering what you are for free, for the opportunity to ride a horse since they cant afford their own
