Asking on behalf of a friend..
..she liveries on a yard where you pay to use lights indoor , she has only been there 6 weeks, and the last three times she has put money in the lights, after about 15 min several others have come into the school, but not one of them offered anything towards lights...on two times they have actually been sitting on their horses on the yard and said they were just going round block, then all join my friend in the indoor!! (Once she put £2 in for hour of lights..) Only time you can reserve it for sole use is for lessons. She has been told by an ex livery of this yard, that these women have always done it to other liveries.. Only time she can ride is after work (7-8pm)
My friend has assisted livery, and does not go there in mornings, only at evenings and weekends.
 
I think it would annoy anyone, it sounds as if this is a regular occurrence and that they have no intention of paying so freeload whenever they can, no idea of the solution unless the YO gets involved and makes a rule that shared use must be shared payment.
 
No..she has asked me first, as she is new on the yard, and it's not something she has come across till the dark nights, I have suggested she have a lesson now and then, as when you have a lesson you don't pay for lights, it's included in lesson... And you have sole use then.. Her horse is excitable, and works better when on own.. In company it gets worked up and calls to the other horses and naps towards them.. I suppose it's one of the drawbacks of moving to a larger yard whereas she was on a yard with two other riders and several retired horses
 
It would only annoy me in terms of people waiting to specifically ride when I was riding, rather than just when suited them. As this would inevitably mean always riding In a busy school. The cost wouldn't bother me as if you were there alone you would have to pay for it anyway.
 
Surely the YO ought to enforce a rule about sharing the costs of using the lights if several riders are in the school.
 
I would wait for them to ride and put money in the meter or I would say something to them if they were doing it on a regular basis
 
How pathetic do those light liggers sound. For the sake of a quid or so! I would have a stern word with them.
 
Yeah that would annoy me. I would either tell them to get out or go in and ride in the dark, then when they come up and ask why the lights aren't on, would say "oh I didn't have the money today, don't worry though its not a crime for you to use your own money if you want lights".
 
I've be annoyed, but I'd deal with it by just politely suggesting they give me a share of the money. "I always seem to be in first, so I don't mind putting the money in the meter, but how about we all chip in or take it in turns?"

^^^^ this! Polite and non aggressive, and you still get what you want, with no ill feeling.
 
This made me laugh because we had the same thing at an old livery yard, but it was n outdoor school, I never thought anything of it at first but then noticed when I put £2 in ( for half an hour!!!) there was one livery in particular who would race down after you as soon as you went in. Then one day the lights broke and we had to ride in the dark the pony was much better as the lights were rubbish and used to throw shadows which he would spook at, so after that we didn't bother anymore, they even had the nerve to question me as to why I hadn't put money in and when I said because he rides better without, they actually had the hump about it, makes me laugh when I think of it now.
 
I would play it tactically. If you're friend isn't training/competing etc, simply don't ride for a week and they might get the hint with no confrontation. Or even, don't ride , then if one if them pays for the lights, quickly tack up and gatecrash
 
Would definitely annoy me.

She could try talking to them, but they clearly do it on purpose if they have always done it so it will doubtfully make a difference.

I would be putting enough in for 30 mins and have a head torch. If they come in and ask how much I've got left, tell them roughly an hour, not sure though. Then see how annoying they find it when it goes dark.
 
I'd say just casually assume they're going to contribute to the lights. "Oh, just leave your share of the money for the lights by my box next time you're down." Even if they don't actually cough up, it'll make them aware that she knows what they're doing.
 
Either ask politely or when you arrive at the yrd go over and offer them £2 and say hi I felt so sorry for you not able to afford the money for the lights and thought that like me you must prefer to ride alone sometimes. So maybe you can go before or after me now
 
Err do know what....it reminds me of people that avoid buying a round of drinks at the bar......you know the type stand back when you all arrive,wait for you to be at the first at the bar and buy the first round.......yeah that is me with 'Sucker' on her forehead....I would ride round the school at canter , yelling 'Get out you freeloaders'......that should work?

Our yard used to have a system like this. It never really bothered me (was away at uni, only riding when on hols so during the day) but I think some people had similar issues to your friend.

YO changed it so cost of lights is included in livery, switch them on when you need them and off when you don't :)
 
I'd lurk and pull a mane, give an extra good brushing, trim feathers or have a tack room tidy up (all very innocent stuff) until they think you're not riding then as soon as they bite the bullet and put the money in for the lights tack up really quickly! If they ask whether you're riding I'd say something like "I've got to get jobs done first, if I have time when I'm done, I might," without giving any sort of timescale.
