I have seen an advert for a horse that I really like the look of. I have spoken to the owner and love the sound of the horse except it hasn't done much hacking, but that aside she sounds perfect.

My current 2 horses are field ornaments so I have nothing to ride.

I have the money and space to keep her.

So what's the problem...

A) its coming into winter
B) my mum is very ill and I am frequently driving 600 mile round trip to see her. She may move nearer but she is too ill to move at the moment and may never be well enough, so I could be hurtling up and down the motorway for months or years to come
C) I work full time a 2 hour commute away. Its full on and high stress job
D) I also run my own business with a largely absent business partner. Its going crazy, trying to recruit, taking on a large new client who is very demanding
D) I am frankly exhausted
E) it would be 7 hour round trip to see the horse

But I want this horse, she's gorgeous, its the first one I wanted to look at since the bucking bronco I saw back in February

Would it be a mad idea?

You sound as though you have alot on your plate right now...do you seriously think you will have the right amount of time for another horse...i'm not trying to be picky or anything just asking....and with the 7hr commute each day?
But on the other hand if this horse is something you really truely want then GO FOR IT!

I also hope your mum gets better soon!!
xx

Yes, it's mad, but we'd not all always sensible.

Can you afford to have the horse just as a field companion for the winter and start again in the spring? It's give her a chance to settle and relax and no pressure for you to ride. Can you afford her full stop!? Could you afford to pay someone to look after her and your other horses is needs be? You do need to have a contingency plan if it all goes wrong.

OR could you get a sharer in - they'd give you extra time and well as possibly money. Even just two days a week off.

Although to be fair, the fact that you're asking the question suggests you know that it's probably not the right thing to do at the mo.

If you're genuinly looking for another horse (and not just window shopping and getting carried away like it do

) and she's perfect, now's just not the time, she could maybe stay with her present owner on 'loan'?

If you think you can deal with her needs to keep her ticking over until things ease off a bit then why not?
How annoyed would you be to let her go somewhere else and find you could have found the time.
Couldnt you find somebody to help you a little?

Oh no the 7 hour round trip is just to view the horse, my normal daily commute to and from work is just 4 hours in total

You are all being very sensible though and I thank you. I suppose it would be a bit crazy. But I do love the look/sound of this horse.

Id say go for it if you have the money and space for it surely you would be able to find a little time for riding even if its only a couple of hours a week (not all horses need working every day)

No, a seven hour trip isn't too bad for the right horse. When I don't have a riding horse, I kind of resent all the time and effort that the field ornaments take up. As long as I've got one to ride, I enjoy looking after them all. You need one to give something back to make it all worth doing. Get a riding horse, if its a good one, you won't regret it, even if it seems a bit mad.

Have you got someone to call on if you get held up on any of the journeys? I couldn't keep mine if I did not share the place and the animals with my sister, we had two field ornaments and two riding horses two years ago when sister broke her ankle, an ill mother and a father who was admitted to hospital for an operation, oh and the house was being rewired, re-roofed and re-plastered! If it had only been the one of us we could not have coped. Then last christmas I broke my wrist, sister took over for a bit, if she had not been there to do the horses I would have been in a right pickle

So if you have someone you can call on (maybe pay) to help out at times, why not get one to ride as well as the retired ones?

Yes I do have help with the horses. I have someone (who is wonderful and I appreciate her sooo much) who comes and mucks out and gets them in for me in the week in the winter time. Its the one and only area of my life that seems to be quite organised....hope I'm not tempting fate by saying this - I couldn't cope if I didn't have her!)

Would it matter if I didn't really have time to ride the horse much for the time being do you think?

I know a lot of people on here would disagree with me, but I quite like to allow a horse to settle in with the 'herd', before expecting too much work from them. I also like them to get to used to us and our routines (mind you I did ride my most recent acquisition the week after I got her

) Plus of course if you do it properly and remove his/her back shoes when it first arrives that gives you a few weeks without work

I do not think it does them any harm to not be ridden if they are handled daily. Just my opinion though.

My life is very busy, I am always chasing the clock! But, you know, whatever life throws at me, I only have to jump on my horse and go for a ride, to make the whole world seem a much better place and I always come back with a smile on my face

If I didn't have a horse to ride, I think I would really struggle!

I reckon you should go and see the horse, and if you get her and she continues being a joy to ride, I bet you will make more time in your day to spend with her (even if now you don't think that's possible!).

I think horses should be paid for by the NHS as a treatment for stress

As someone who's working life is almost as manic as yours, if I didn't have the neds, I think I would actually turn into a work machine and burn out long before I'm due.

Seven hours round trip? No problem, Road Trip! Brill. Take a good friend (or me, I love road trips
