Evening , done my yarc jobs this am ridden , left yard should have only been going back at teatime but was on my way past so thought I would nip in and skip out , when I got down there was two people outside my stable plus another livery inside my horses stable attempting to try and turn him around with some haylage , que I asked what was going on and why was she in my stable , the reply was what's wrong with your horse as to which I replied nothing that I am aware off , he was fine when I left which was an hour before , the livery said he is hobbling , can't walk , I immediately got his headocollars and walked him out , no concerns bright happy and walked out sound , put him back away ,
Obviously I am not happy as my phone number is outside my stable should anything be wrong or can ring yard owner if I cannot get hold of , the fact that my horse was fine he had been worked hard this am and was more than likely just enjoying a snooze , brought him out again tonight sound and no concerns , I have said to the livery concerned not to it again and ring I have also spoken to yard owner aswell x
 
I wouldn't be happy, but equally if my horse was suffering I wouldn't want it to be ignored either - a difficult one.

A phone call first would have been a good idea however...
 
Tbh I'd rather my fellow liveries went in and checked my horse if they thought something was wrong and I'd trust them to call me if that was the case. I am on a good, friendly DIY yard though where we do all keep a look out for one another.
 
Very strange?? Do you know these people reasonably well, I'd expect a phone call to ask first, especially if you're not far away.
 
I agree I wouldn't want any of my horses suffering but the fact that there was nothing actually wrong with him and that I wasn't called
 
Certain folk doing this wouldn't bother me, I trust their judgement completely, others (mainly those I've never asked an opinion of, ever) I'd be a bit annoyed.
 
That seems very odd to me - cannot imagine one of the liveries at our yard doing that - though we would probably get each others' horses in if one of them was out alone going bonkers or something. Or if we thought one was in distress we would definitely phone the owner. Obviously I dont know the people concerned but it doesnt really ring true as an explanation to me - how would turning him round have helped or clarified what was happening anyway?
 
I'd rather find someone investigating if they thought there was something wrong. As an example, this week pony had a mild bout of colic on Monday. Vet came, pony settled, all ok. Wednesday, new livery sees pony lying down in stable and raises alarm with YO in case colicing again. I was called and rushed over to find a false alarm ... But would rather that than the alternative. Rather have attentive folk around when I'm not there tbh.
 
Only know them as a livery and not people who I see or speak to an awful lot to be honest , i think they were more shocked that I caught them in my stable with my horse more than anything , my poor horse was trying to have an afternoon nap !!, It only takes a phone call and I have put a big note on outside to say if any concerns please call me or yard owner or vet if genuine emergency and I cannot be contactable x
 
I agree grey legs in raising alarm if something wrong but would take a second to call me or yarc owner or a vet if they felt it was needed , i am a little bit over protective of them but at the same time they are not there horses to interfer with ,
Just a quick call to say they had concerns would have Been sufficient x
 
An overreaction maybe? I would rather someone checked my horse if they thought something was wrong with it. It was a livery owner, not a random person of the street
 
I would think it a bit strange in my opinion if there was any concern with one of my horses i would expect them to either contact the YO or me rather than them to just take it upon themselves to see to it

Their reaction would be what would worry me a bit. If it was one of my friends not a problem but doesn't sounds that way.
 
I would expect anyone passing my horse to take a look if they were concerned, as I do for other people's horses. Being vigilant has saved the lives of a few horses I know, the last time was just a month ago.

it wouldnt worry me if they had a general concern prior to calling if a prob.2 winters ago when -minus 6 a livery who i knew well was up late to check her horse. Baby was rugless as normal but she went in just to check she was warm. Her comment next day was "she was cosy" lol. I appreciated her concern and pleased Baby was ok :)
 
It wouldn't bother me at all although I am on friendly terms with everyone on my yard so would be glad they were looking out for my horse.
 
In all honesty? I find it strange that you have a problem with people showing concern for your horse. I'm sure they'd have rang you if they had discovered something was in fact wrong.. They were probably just checking first instead of panicking you for no reason.
I'd find it strange if someone didn't investigate when they were concerned about a horse on their yard.
 
I have lost all trust in a few on my yard. Long story short but the electric fence was left turned off, my ponies got into another field and my mare had a bit of a kicking match with another mare. A livery caught my ponies and put them in the spare stables. Ordinarily I'd be grateful for this, but they put them in empty stables, with no hay or water at 9 am then just left them! The first I knew was at 2 pm when another livery found my ponies in, and the fencing down! They are outside ponies that dont stable well, so you can imagine the state she found them in. Luckily she sorted the fence and put my ponies back with hay but to say I was livid was an understatement!! The livery in question has my number as they text me the night before about something else so there was absolutely no excuse for them not to tell me what had happened, so I can completely see why you are annoyed OP.

Your situation is completely different. No one would be happy with grass livery ponies being dumped in strange stables with no hay or water for hours.
That wasn't being thoughtful, it was being thoughtless.
 
I would want and would do the same in that situation too

For someone to go in and check the horse ok.

So no it would not bother me I'd be grateful even if it was a false alarm
 
I am grateful that people are paying attention and more so that there was nothing actually wrong with him I am just saying that a phone call would have been nice , bearing in mind the livery in question isn't very knowledgable , I agree if horse was In danger / suffering then no question to go In stable
But today's situation a quick phone call to say they had concerns would have been useful
 
Perhaps they were just assessing when you arrived back.
Perhaps their next step would have been to call you/ask the YO/ or just keep an eye out ?

Be careful about giving people the impression you don't want interference with your horse. A minor intervention could prevent a injury/illness next time.
 
Tricky. Both of my recent/current yards, I'd see it as normal, we were/are all very close and friendly. I'd hope they'd check first, call after if really essential. If someone said they'd got mine out to check, I'd just ask if he was ok. However, if it was someone at the yard I didn't really know, I'd want a call and then I'd either go up or get a mate to check if I couldn't go up.

What did they say when you spoke to them, OP?
 
Normally I'd say I'd rather someone check first and then call but what does enticing your horse with a bit of hay to walk small circles in his stable do to help if they think your horse was hobbling? I would have thought maybe sticking a headcollar on and seeing how he walked out of the stable would be more appropriate?

How old are the people in question? If they are younger folk (sorry young folk!) I would worry they were just messing with my horse and came up with a random excuse not to get in trouble for it :o
