A lady at our yard is thinking of selling her horse, she has sweetitich ( controled with a boett rug) would this put you off. The lady is worried that people will be . Opinions thanks.
A friend of mine has bought a pony who has really bad sweetitch. The lady that sold it to her sent him with his boett rug and all the other gear she used to manage it!
It may put off a total beginner as they may not be able to cope or understand what sweetitch is, but i think most horse owners are aware of it and would be able to manage it.
Put it this way, if I found a horse who was exactly what i wanted in every way i wouldn't be concerned about the sweetitch.
I bought a horse that has never had sweet itch (I have seen pics of it last summer and it was fine) - now, he is the itchiest bugger in the world, has half a mane and half a tail
Therefore, no, it would not put me off as forewarned is forearmed and you can keep it under control, whereas mine is not going to have a mane this year
I get ezcema and I know how intollerable the itching can be at times,.... there is no way I would feel happy knowing my horse was feeling 10 x worse than that
I have looked after a horse with sweet itch and can honestly say that what ever we did, it was never enough for him to be comfortable
I cant stand the guilty feelings
For someone with lots of time and patience I would imagine it would not be such a problem though
And lovely to know that you have prevented/treated the horse and made him comfortable etc.
Masterbronze, exactly what i told her. If it was great in every way it wouldnt put me off either. I will pass on all your comments, thankyou so much, hopefully she will feel more positive.
yes. it would put me off - i have a pony that can itch if given the chance and not treated, she will be for sale soon - although i would give her away to the right home....
No. I have three with sweet itch. Two of them have been placed at county show level (the other is just a baby). As long as it is mentioned in the advert, then sensible prospective buyers should be able to weigh up the pros and cons of whether they live in a particularly midge infected area and if they can cope with the rugs, creams, sprays, etc.
In honesty yes it would put me off. My boy has it very badly and we manage it as best we can but he is very uncomfortable all summer and it makes him miserable. You also couldn't ride him in the mornings or evenings as he'd roll with you on him to relieve the itching...
However I think many people would if the pony was perfect.
