i am debating whether to sell my cob as we just don't seem suited to each other ridden wise and i feel he would be better suited with someone more confident and experienced

he is not a dope on a rope but can easily catch/handle him, he is good to ride we have been having lessons which always leave me feeling confident but then when im on my own i feel back to square one and i have no other help, his flaw is if he panics his reaction is to canter off, he has no malice in him it is just confidence i think and after it happening a few times i find myself worrying it will happen again which obviously doesn't help him, he is 5 1/2 so i know i need to be confident so he remains confident and i have begun to feel nervous hacking incase he does it and i cant stop

Could you find someone to hack with to give you some support or possibly get him hacked out by an experienced person to school him and bring him on for you.

A horse can always be put up for sale, whether they sell at the moment is a bit of a lottery, it may be better, as he sounds suitable in most ways to invest some time and money in his education and if still not right to try and sell in the spring. Possibly move to a yard where you can get some help, he is still very young and this may just be a stage he is going through.

He sounds exactly like my horse. I didn't think he'd sell at all but I was very honest on his add described all his flaws but also what his potential was like. I decided to put him on loan in the end but he had several good homes wanting him. So I'd say go for it just rember to be honest

we dont have a school at the yard im on, or any off road places to hack (i am calmer off road!) ..so it isnt really an ideal place, but its the only place with 24/7 turnout in winter so moving not an option till at least spring...

ive had a few lessons which have improved my understanding of how he is thinking etc, but then he cantered off (very fast!) and i came off, so my confidence has taken a nose dive

dont really have any horsey friends to come and hack him to see if it is just me, or if he does the same with everyone, i had considered sending him away for some schooling, but at £135 a week i can't afford that (student)...so although it may be a phase, which is probable, i dont really have the facilities to make a change atm, and it makes me feel useless not being able to do much with him

It does not help when you have no facilities and your confidence is low, it is a difficult one, if you try and sell you may find that with nowhere for you to show him or people to try, that it will not be easy to sell, the market usually picks up in about Feb. so maybe try now if you think it is for the best and if he doesnt go have a break and try again then.

Where are you based? Could you pay your instructor to hack him out for you a couple of times to see if he's is better with a more experienced person on board.
Sometimes it can help to have someone on foot walk out with you, just a reassuring presence for you & your youngster.
I hope that things improve. Good luck :)

he isn't 100% on the roads so i wouldn't feel happy asking someone else to hack him (i get someone to walk out with me and they lead him until we get to the bridleway so everyone stays safe) incase he does his canter off thing on the road

i asked my instructor about him asking if i was capable of bringing him on etc and she said i was which i was happy with as 90% of time he is ok in the school (well fenced off bit of field we call the school)

do you have any friends nearby that could hack over to yours and hack out with you? Really sounds like your confidence has taken one hell of a knock, I would perhaps sacrifice the 24 hour t/o to find some safe off road hacking on a busier yard where you may get some more help otherwise, think you may have to wait until after Christmas if you really want to sell.

there are people to hack out with on yard im at currently which ive been out with, but still have someone on foot come along...at previous yard (now shut down) i hacked with others on off road hacking and was fine (bit nervous but they looked after me) and even started to hack alone, but then had to move to this place which doesnt have much off road hacking

i am pretty much stuck till after xmas as can't move if the snow comes (would need to give months notice if wanted to move so earliest could be mid-jan), i am wondering if i should get some groundwork lessons? or maybe get an RA to take him out on the road see what he is like (in hand), i would be willing to work on that issue if a professional told me i (with help) could train it out of him (the not cantering off thing) but i just don't know if it is a reaction he will always have
