loan or buy a horse with seeing it first??

the reason i ask is cause a really nice horse has come up looking for a long term loan home with view to buy. really nice and gently on the ground super safe but forward ride, basically every thing i have been looking for but she's a long way away and i doubt if i wanted to take her i would be able to go view her first. i would want every last detail about the horse, a vets certificate to prove the horse is sound and healthy plenty of pics and vid so i could see exactly what she looks like and how she moves.

idealy i would love to go and see her first but if i don't and let her go i could be passing up a good opertunity

Nope.....have to go see and try,and normally I know this is the right one for me,don't do lots of visits and tend to know what I'm looking for .....think I went slightly wrong with my current cob!

lol!!! i have done this before with ponies before poppy, and they were fine ponies but i dunno. i would have her on loan to start with so if i had any problems she could go back. i'm so confused again

No, I would always want to try it. If it was a youngster and unbroken I MAY consider buying without seeing, but I dont think you can appreciate a horse's character without meeting them first! When I was looking for Ellie, we looked at 23 different horses, and I would say on paper, about 12 of them SHOULD have been perfect. But for whatever reason, we just didnt click! So I would advise that you go and see this girlie before committing yourself! Good luck!

With my boy, we saw him but we weren't able to ride him due to a nasty overreach. He reared when trotted up, figited, was nasty, bolshy, bit me and gave my mum a black eye................. in any other circumstances we wouldn't really of brought him but my cousin knew him very well (wasn't the seller) and said he was normally a real gentlemen. Dad wouldnt pay for tickets for us to fly up and see him again so we had to buy him unridden. But pleased to say he is an absoulutely fab horse!!!

I dont think I could take a horse without even seeing it though

yep, i bought one unseen. she was everything they said, EXCEPT that she was a total nutter who hated being ridden, had been totally turned against people and had a very good repertoire of rider-losing tricks. i am very patient, very determined, and pretty brave, but even i gave up with her, just wasn't worth putting her through it and risking us both.

so, no, i never would buy or loan a horse unseen again...!

Out of interest, who would you expect to pay for that?

I wouldn't pay over £200 vetting a horse for loaning when I'd not even seen it in the flesh, and I'm quite sure the owner wouldn't.

Also, I certainly wouldn't send a horse off on loan if the person hadn't even been to try it out...

I would go and see it, you say you are not prepared to make the long journey but would expect the horse to do a 2 way trip if things didn't work out.

the people that had saffy came up to see her with a horse box so they could try her and take her, the little lad had a 5 minute hack on her and i watched them fussing her, i would normally be very sceptical(sp) but i could not have wished for a better home she is so happy

i brought her the same way i went to see her in the morning and she was home my tea time she was very cheap and i was planning to sell her so i just wanted to see if she had something about her and she did but she did try to kick and bite me when i went to see her and did kick and bite me when i got her home however she hasn't shown any of this behaviour at her new home basically they asked my every question under the sun and i gave them as much info as possible they practically got her unseen really.

out of interest would they be bringing the horse to you or would you go and get it?

i think loaning a horse unseen is different to buying one if he turned out to be the wrong horse you wouldn't have a problem

I personally wouldnt sell a horse to someone if they didnt take the time to come and see it but thats just me. As for buying without seeing i would if it were from Spain or something but would want pics and video and a vet to see it.

personally i wouldnt for me buying a horse is at a big finacial rate and emotional. it would b to much of a risk for me to buy without seeing 1st!

Yes. I usually go to see them of course. But I bought my Welsh D unseen from Wales. Mainly because he was the only one I found in months who was 15.2hh which is the size I wanted! I saw a DVD of him though and he was only a 3yo so I hoped nothing would be wrong with him if you know what I mean! I had him fully vetted though before agreeing. Don't regret it at all.

Also bought a 14.2hh unseen from the Western Isles. He was an unbacked 4yo so again I assumed he'd be a clean sheet (which he was). I saw one picture of him. He was only £500 though and I couldn't go and see him as I was heading off to England for the RC Champs and couldn't wait til I got back because she was bringing his brother over to the mainland that weekend. So bought him, and again turned out very well!

I wouldn't spend that much though on an unseen horse simply because there is a degree of risk. And Id only buy very young horses (ie. unbacked or recently backed) so they hopefully haven't developed any problems. I'd never SELL to anybody unseen though! Thats totally different!
