I am on a small private yard with my horses. The YO has a few horses who are turned out 24/7 in their own field and another 'livery' who rents the cottage onsite who's horse also lives out but in a different field. The YOs horses and livery horse can 'chat' over the fence but my horses are right over the other side of the farm.
I was told yesterday that the liveries horse has a bad cough and infection and is on antibiotics for a couple of weeks. YOs pony has now got the same. My horses have been touching the YOs horses over the fence when in the school (the school is directly next to field).

If I had known about the virus/infection, I wouldn't have let my horses near the others as a couple of mine are quite high-risk with regards to respiratory infections.

I'm annoyed that the livery, whom I have spoken to nearly every day since her horse had the vet out, has not told me and I had to hear it from the YO a week or so later! YO was even shocked we didn't know!

Would you be annoyed if you werent told?
 
I don't see it that way though. I see it as being the person who's horse it is' responsibility.
And to be fair to her, she had seen us talking and thought she would have had the sense to mention it!

I guess because im not on a livery yard its different to the way livery yards run!
 
I agree with Beeboptallulah. The yard owner's duty is to oversee. S/he is the person collecting your field rent & has a duty of care to you & other liveries. The co-ordinator if you like. If you have problems, traditionally the Y.O should sort things out & should have made you aware of the infection.Soz. Just re-read your post & you're not on a trad. livery yard. Maybe you could ask Y.O to keep you informed in future ?

Ok I understandy why you are annoyed.... but how many thousands of horses "talk" to their horse neighbours... and there is no communication with the humans at all ie different yards etc - you cant expect each yard, field to have a board up saying "my horses wormed with x today" "my horse has a nasal discharge and vet it due on x day can you.

I understand your situatuion and no its not good but this "duty of care" is really starting to pee me off - If i was paying £400 quid a week I expect a duty of care - If i am paying £30 quid a week - i think myself lucky that the farmer has the grace to allow me on to his/her land and trash it. If we carry on with these attitudes no one is going to want us on their land - so cut a bit of slack for heavens sake
 
Gingerwitch - I don't understand where you're coming from?
I pay a good amount each month to keep my horses where they are, its not just a farmers land. All horses are kept on the same yard so its not unreasonable to ask for a little communication!
I am simply annoyed that something which could have been avoided has happened. My horse who already has COPD and breathing problems has, today, started to show signs of the same virus. I now stand the possibility of avoidable vets fees. I think I have the right to be p*ssed off!
 
Reminds me of incident at yard. My daughter notices loads of gunk coming from horse in next stable. Turned out it had full blown strangles and she told no one
 
Agree with Ginger witch to some extent. Also likelihood is by the time the infection was noticed in any case it would have already been transferred. Also if your horse is high risk why expose it to others by letting it touch noses with a strange horse when using the school? - can't say that it would be something I would do.
 
They aren't strange horses? They're the YO's well cared for horses which I ride myself.
I can't exactly help it if the horse sticks its head over the fence at mine! - clearly I shouldn't let my horses socialise.

I think I must be more sensitive to issues regarding my horses health than others on here :)
 
I had a similar situation arise a few months ago.

Older pony got a cough, then spotty & progressively worse to the point there was thick green mucous on the floor outside his stable. Owners ignored, yard owner never around.

This went on for 2 months roughly, many people moaning. Got to its worst whilst owners on hol - yard owner should have called vet but chose to ignore. Virus got so bad it spread & whole yard got isolated til strangles test back.

Bottom line, all horses got rid with general antibiotics & back in work within 2 weeks, mine couldn't shake it. Since had specific drugs & blood tests run etc, cost me a fortune. All started April, now mid August & I still can't ride!!!! Wasted my summer & I'm livid.

All because of yard owner not giving a damn & a careless owner who could have sorted it before it escalated that far.

Hence moving yards in 3 weeks ......
