Would you be honest ???

ash would say what tia would, he isnt the best looking etc.
not sure what i would say, depended if i liked the owner , although i would probably spout some other rubbish at them to satisfy them.
surely though if someones asks you do you think my horse is handsome and you say well he has a kind eye etc , wouldnt they take that as a NO then?!

If it helps, when training for my BHS stages, my instructor said 'always grab the ugly horses in the line up - they aren't there for their looks so they must do the job!':D
How true it was....all horses have their good points, and it's up to us to find them...
I wouldn't say, if asked 'God that's like a hippo mule cross' - instead I'd say 'Oh I love dark bays' 'What good condition he's in' etc. There's always something nice you can say and the world has enough unhappiness without generating more.

if you cant say anything nice then dont say anything at all.

Even if you think its ugly the owner probably doesnt and its the most precious thing to them so why upset them. Anway im sure ther would be something nice to say about it.

Someone upset my mum when she was out riding. A little boy shouted at his mum - "Oh luck at that carthorse mummy!"

She was riding Sasha - our 14.3hh Welsh DxDales - shes far from a carthorse. It really upset my mum as sasha is her pride and joy. Even if she is just a common pony shes still the best thing since sliced bread to mum.

If on here and it was about someone's horse they already owned then I might say x is cute or x looks like a kind horse.
In real life, face to face I'd have trouble as I'm absolutely useless at lying, it shows on my face if I even think something bad

Then again I might get away with it if it really WAS ugly as I usually like ugly thing...no one ever likes my tatse in men for instance!

Think I'd try not to comment on its appearance if I thought it were ugly! Don't like to hurt people's feelings.

Its funny though how you see the horse differently when you know it properly. Before I bought Merlin (horse in avatar) I actually used him as a specific example of type of horse I wouldn't buy - too small, didn't want a chestnut, didn't like his long mane, he's got feathers and silly bulgy eyes that show the white when he's alarmed (which is most of the time) .... of course now I've had him 10 years I see the "real him"

and love him to bits & think he's absolutely gorgeous!

So can understand how people with "ugly" horses think they are handsome!

I would never say anything so rude to someone. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all, and if someone said Murph was ugly they'd get a punch in the mouth!

Handsome is as handsome does, if I didn't find a horse attractive then I'd try to find something pleasant to say about it. Just because I reckon my painted pony looks like a hereford cow doesn't mean I necessarily want other people saying that to my face.

I don't ask the "What do you think?" question at all, which saves someone fishing for a tactful alternative to the "Jeez, that's ugly

" thought banging around in their head.

I have a real problem with saying they are nice if they are not..... my best friend had twins (human obviously) and as I walked into the hozzie ward she said before I could even speak...... 'yes yes I know they are hideous' they were too!!!!

But they grew up to be lovely identical boys!!

Dont really know what I would say if pressed though.... the old chestnut..... 'not my type' probably!!!
