the horse was advertised as hacking well in company, but hadnt been hacked alone as surrounding roads were very busy?

horse does go out around the fields on its own and is great in the heaviest of traffic (regulary ridden on a verge with huge curtainsiders, car transporters, buses tractors and trailer etc going past) but due to this type of traffic we tend to hack in pairs. We have to use this road to get to any of the quieter places to hack.

if he sounds right for you in every other way and hes not too far, a viewing wont hurt. you may decide you love him and will work through hacking alone with him or you may hate him and its done then :)

I would go for it, I have ridden along roads like that and there was only 1 horse I would be happy about hacking there alone. If he hacks round fields alone then he should be fine. Is there any chance of boxing him somewhere where you could see if he hacks alone?

I would still go and view as the horse does go round the fields on his/her own and I think its sensible to only hack on busy roads in pairs so can understand the logic.

Ah sorry should have said I would be the seller!
I find selling quite stressful, do my up most to tell prospective purchasers everything about the horse, but you hear so many horror stories of buyers trying to return horses I wondered if the 'heavy traffic' might be seen as a 'get out'. It is perfectly genuine and I would be happy for said horse to be hacked out by a purchaser on this road, obviously would watch them ride him in the school before hand!

I personally think if you are upfront and honest (which from your post seem to be!) then it will work out fine. Good idea about seeing buyers ride first before heading out on the road!! :)

Not if the advertiser was being honest no, because obviously you do what you think is safe, if you have very busy main roads and don't have the sort of roads to 'play on' with a horse that either naps or is traffic shy or too dam right spooky then of course you can understand why advertiser has chosen to ride in company and of course state this in the advert, if the buyer has better surroundings to enable them to get the horse used to hacking out alone then it wouldn't be a problem and wouldn't put me off.

But if the owner knows full well the horse is the sort of horse that won't even hack out on roads that quiet you could hear a pin drop and using the story as a bit of a cover up like people do, then you I can see why people would just avoid the add altogether and not want to take the risk.

No, if it was what I was looking for, I wouldn't be put off for the reasons you state. The road I rode along today is much the same, with a small bridge over a canal on a bend. No room for error. I certainly wouldn't be riding my 4 year old over that alone -except on a Sunday, when the lorries aren't so much in evidence.
You sound like the kind of seller I like. Genuine. Good luck with selling your horse.

No I have viewed a couple like this, the first we loved and would have bought had she passed the vet. The hacking was obviously due to roads as they were off a very busy road near a motorway junction, she was fine in the fields when we tried her and we knew she had been out and about to shows.

The second wasn't on busy roads, on fairly narrow country lanes, but they said following an accident they had a yard policy that no one hacked alone ever. As they explained that they also pointed out the "hacking log" where they had to sign in and out and indicate their route and likely return time for safety so I believed them. We decided that one wasn't the one for us for unrelated reasons.

If the horse just hasn't hacked alone before then it is something I would hope I could work on, if it had hacking issues already then I would be cautious.

If the seller was honest as you seem to be then I would probably still go to view. I personally would not like to hack on very busy roads by myself anyway, so If I was allowed to hack out with another horse in your sort of traffic and the horse was foot perfect I would be happy with that.

You state that the horse does hack about the fields alone, if they horse had not hacked alone AT ALL then that may put me off a little :)

Sounds like your horse is capable of hacking alone but for other reasons you are not able to from your yard, so I would put "great hack, fine with traffic" in the advert and then explain to anyone who called what you have said above. If a serious buyer had worries then you could always offer to box to another location and take him on a hack on his own from there.

It wouldn;t pu tme off in itself, and I would go and try it. If I like the horse I would ask the sellers if they would consider boxing it somewhere quieter to be hacked alone.

I have one that won't hack alone now, and is great in traffic, but I think even if you took him out with another horse you would realise that he wouldn't be good on his own.

It wouldn't put me off as our hacking is mainly off road where we are. Your honesty is something would make me more likely to view your horse rather than less, particularly in our circumstances.

Thanks evryone has made me feel better about it if I do have to advertise him, I really dont want to sell him, but its something that I may have to do in the future:(
