I have a new horse who I've had about 3 months. He's 5yrs and absolutely super. He's a very laid back type, doesn't get wound up about much but wakes up enough to do the job if that makes sense.
I have noticed he lies down in the field during the day quite often to sleep. This seems odd to me as he's in at night and always lies down. He's not worked hard so its not that he's knackered from work.
He is due his flu jab in the next few weeks and i was wondering about having a routine blood test done just to make sure everything is as it should be.
Does this seem extreme or sensible?
Obviously i don't know him that well so maybe its normal for him but i would hate to be pushing him if there was something wrong

I wouldn't worry if he has always behaved this way. Some horses are just horizontal and they all have their funny behaviours. If he is working well and looking bright then I wouldn't be concerned.

Tbh a routine blood test won't break the bank so if it will put your mind at rest then there is no harm asking for one.

I wouldn't be too worried. I've got one here who I regularly have to go and poke, to make sure she's alive. She's a buzzy mare, but she likes to have a proper midday snooze!

My gelding used to sleep flat out for so long neighbours and my farrier have climbed the gate to check he's ok!! Don't know if it was related as had always slept alot lying down since 3 years old (when I first had him) but aged 13 he came up lame due to bone cyst in stifle (was happily hunting etc before became an issue). He even used to panic me, I'd laugh at him flat out then call him, then walk over calling then start jogging and yelling and eventually he would raise his head, roll and eventually get up!
