Would you bother with a vetting for a veteran?

Given her age and that you are only looking for a quiet hack I probably wouldn't get her vetted. I would have presumed as a Farrier that you'd be pretty good at looking at things like confirmation and soundness and I can't see her wind being a major issue for you.

She looks like a sweetie.
I am not sure I would bother with a veteran vetting when you are only buying as a light hack for that price.
Hopefully if the owners are honest enough they would tell you of any problems she may have

This is what we thought.

My wife is a great horse person so if i miss anything she wont

She sounds perfect to me.
I've never bothered with a vetting for any horse old or young and have not wished that I had after I've got them home. Just a note of caution though, I have had 3 heavy horses (2xClydesdales and 1 show bred Shire) and have had to have 2 pts prematurely because of illness. I am firmly of the opinion that this is because the gene pools are so small these days - the 1st Clyde was well into her 30s but had probably been born in the '60s. As a result of this I have decided against buying another heavy. I doubt very much if a vetting would have shown up either of the illnesses, which developed long after the purchases. Do let us know what you decide.

I don't think you can go too far wrong with a basic 2 stage vetting just to check heart, lungs and basic soundness...

Having said that I've never had a horse vetted so I wouldn't unless there was something I wasn't sure of

The advert sounds very good and genuine and I expect there will be a queue for her
smile.gif

My only little concern is that as she is a rare breed and has bred foals and still could, is why is she so cheap
confused.gif

well i'v never had a horse vetted and so far so good. But then i'v only ever really bought very very young horses like just weaned and for very cheap and i'v been willing to just take the chance. Never had problem getting insurance for it afterwards either. if i was buying this horse i'd be tempted to just not get it vetted. I really like the look of her, wishing you the very best of luck when you go to see her.

I saw the post earlier, and think she looks lovely !! I'm so glad you may be taking her on.

No I wouldn't get a vetting for an 18 year old as she's just going to be a light hack. Unless insurance would demand it ?

She looks an absolute cracker - will you let us know what happens ?

.... tbo I don't think 18 is that old .... but that comes from someone with a 28 year old

I ride a 30 year old horse called Punch, who is believed to have some Suffolk in him and he is wonderful

Not on a £800 quid horse, and not with your knowledge BUT before you buy the rugs and saddle please make sure they are a good fit - the vetran i brought un vetted with tack and rugs is a perfect horse BUT the saddle was crap and the rugs were all thrown away as they rubbed him.

By the way - good luck and i hope he is the "one"

I value my vets opinion, and think I would have him vet even an older horse. For one thing it sets a sort of "start level" for the horses health, and then if you have problems (and who doesnt with horses)they are easier to reccognise. Is it somthing long term or a new thing. Of course the vet will find plenty of mileage on an older horse. Thats no reason to reject the horse, but for example, a chronic heart problem is somthing you need to know about.

well you ought to be able to judge the state of feet! get them to lunge on a 5 to 8 m cirlcle on hard both ways soon see if its sound! a bloody good canter to check its wind! could even do your own flexion tests! the only bits you couldnt do is eyes and heart!! someone above mentioned £800 is she fully registered? good luck and no i wouldnt get a vetting if 800 pounds!! 8000 yes i would with bells on!

Could you have her on few days' trial, and get your vet to give her a once-over? That way you know from the outset what her health overview is, like the prevous poster said

yes she is just over 800. I think its because of her age.

Yes we plan on doing all that and prob having her looked over at home as well.

at 18 i would expect some wear and tear but that certainly doesnt mean that she doesnt have some miles left in her

i think she looks ace and if she is right in the flesh then i will love her too

Is it sad that i am excited

If I was an experienced horsey person, (like a farrier , who'd studied leg anatomy - lol), I wouldn't bother with a vetting. To me, legs are sooo important and being a farrier ...
I'm just not experienced enough myself, so I would have a vetting. Also, the horse is relatively cheap anyway, so it's not like you have a huge outlay.

That horse is BOOTIFUL - SO JEALOUS!!!!!!!!!! Let us know what happens. Never seen a SP in the flesh before
laugh.gif
How exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not on an 18 yo horse at that price probably not no. I don't think £850 is cheap cheap either. After all she hasn't done anything to justify any higher asking price, she is and older 'teenager' so i think£850 is perfectly reasonable if rare breed as well.

As others have said, with your knowledge of feet and legs - after all they are the most important bits really! I wouldn't bother about a vetting. If the people are genuine and have owned her for that long there's no reason to suspect she is in poor health. A good look at her general health/coat etc will tell you that. There's not that many horses with serious heart problems really and a 2 stage won't tell you much more than you can see yourself as won't test the heart/lungs after exercise anyway.

I guess I would want to check her eyes for cataracts to be honest and you should be able to do this yourself if you know enough about horses, in a darkened stable with a small torch. I know my 23 yo pony has a small cataract in one eye and although it;s not causing any issues at the mo it is something i am aware of and have my vet check at vaccinations.

I guess that'd be my only concern if I didn't think I could check things like that myself. After all, you need the horse to have decent vision even if just used for hacking!

I WANT her I WANT her I WANT her!!!!!

I am very envious and very disappointed that you saw her first. Another suffolk lover here.

Hope viewing is a success

Ooh yes - the eyes. I had a vetting on an ex racehorse recently - poor lad had 6 cataracts in one eye and he was only young - very unlucky.
