hi all, im fairly new on here but wanted your opinions.A friend of mine has a mare who is currently at stud the mare has ocd i thought that this was a inherited condition(i may well be wrong)she is putting her to an event stallion in the hope of eventually having a top class event horse when said foal is older, just wanted people thoughts, experiances thanks hardy :o

I don't think the condition itself is heredetary HOWEVER I do think that there is something about each individual horse that predisposes them to such conditions which in the case of your friend's mare could be passed on to her foal. Breed with caution and void types where such problems are common.

I wouldn't, personally. There's enough foals out there to buy one that is unlikely to have such issues (and, tbh, it's cheaper in the long run missing out the first year of foaly trying to kill or maim itself in any way possible!)

Also, it doesn't matter how good the stallion, if the mare isn't 110% likely to throw a top eventer, that's not what she'll get!

Hi , Im right in thinking you are talking about Obsessive Compulsive ? Nothing wrong with it ...... my mare and I both have mild forms of it ... I like to call it being careful .. cautious and tidy!!! LOL ... no ... joking aside , its not for everyone and unless the mare is the best of the best I'd think long and hard about breeding anyway , never mind with a poss "problem" . I know I drive people nuts with my "well I just being tidy !!!" but my mare .... Im not sure how many would put up with it ... well they didnt , thats why I've got her . She cannot go to new places , we have to go to the same place 3, 4, 5 times before she's comfortable there , so competitions are out , we spent a whole summer having to ride the same ride , 1 day one way then next the other way round , and she was very happy with that . We have to stop outside the stable EVERY time to check that field is in the same place , trees , stream , muckheap , then when she's ready we can go to the field or ride . Shes not everyones cuppa but we get on great .... 2 freaks together ! LOL
