..... a 17.2hh ID X TB mare (big angular head with a piggy eye, low set on neck, exceptionally long in the back, poor movement, with a history of stifle and hock problems - though did hunt a season with an MFH) to a 14.2hh Show Pony (albeit an extremely successful one)?

Is this a trick question?

Why? I didn't do it!! I advised against it TBPH. The aim is to breed an 'intemediate hunter'

Talking of odd crosses, I was born in Kenya & they used to have Zebra crosses because they were more managable as pack animals etc, but were tough as old boots. I wonder who thought of crossing a donkey with a horse & why?

But amazingly the stallion owner agreed to go along with it! What on earth were they thinking of, and how on earth could it help the reputation of their stallion. Obviously refusing a stud fee never came into their mind. and then people wonder why the Germans, Dutch, Fench and Danes laugh at us.
