My sister is looking to buy a registered Friesian. Has a budget of 5k. Doesn't want one imported as wants one that is already being ridden/up to weight etc. She has found a gorgeous one. 5 years, riding nicely but a little green. He has a bog spavin on his near hind hock. She doesn't know whether to go for it or continue looking. Owner said it was from a floating piece of bone that has been removed and is now only 'cosmetic'. I would say it was the size of a small satsuma. Horse has never been lame on it. Would this horse pass a vet with this? Should she buy it? Thanks in advance

Hello!

Around 4 years ago I purchased a 4 year old TB Mare who had a Bog Spavin on both hinds. Her's were caused by excessive road work at such a young age! After having her 2months, they had dissapeared! Five years later, and no lameness ever caused by the bog spavins and they never re-appeard!

She did however, fail the vetting because of them and them only, but we bought her anyway!

Obviously, that's my own experience so it may vary for your horse, but that's what happened with me! :D

I'd be cautious as they can be a problem,I understand it depends what the underlying cause was, nutrional, stress or trauma. Sometimes they resolve themselves or cause no problem at all apart from being visible but as they can cause a problem the price would need to reflect that. I bought a fiveyear old with v small bog spavins that passed the vet OK and passed again at 10 when he moved on to a new owner, but I was always a bit worried about them. I also had a 12 year old with quite large ones who was bought for next to nothing and was never bothered by them at all but she was only used for light hacking.

My older eventer had two on his hocks, however he was 15 so entitled to some wear and tear. I would be concerned buying something with these at 6
