I am not overly bothered by them, as you say if its fused, I was lead to believe it was ok.
Thats said todays market is so wide open, you should be able to get something as good or better, for the same price.
I didn't buy one with a bone spavin but have one diagnosed with spavin and albeit one short bout of lameness when it was diagnosed last year she had it injected and now she is still doing everything on no pain medication and it is not fused. Some pictures in photo gallery of her I just posted i think show just how little effect they have on her! So for the right price I would buy one as the price has t reflect a risk you are taking with one!
Mine has just been treated for spavin,I was a bit concerned that he might have arthritis in other joints and they wouldnt show up until later .I had to have some xrays done this week for splints and had knees xrayed at the same time and there is no indication that there is anything going on in other joints. So I dont feel it would put me off if it was a good horse.I have been told that he can go back to jumping etc once it has completely fused it shouldnt affect their future.
Yes, I would and did. I bought a rising 5yo (unbroken at the time) with a bone spavin on her LH.
She has been in constant work since....and I've had no problems with it at all, nor did it ever need treatment.
Of course, I may be jumping the gun - and it may become a problem in the future...but as she's now hitting 20...and still sound, I'm not too worried
.
But - and this is a big but - it depends on where the spavin is - bony problems between articular surfaces fare a lot less well.
S
i did buy one with bone spavin, mainly because
i had just lost a horse and was desperate for another (i know - naughty),
he was kept in terrible conditions,
he had an attitude problem (and would have ended up going through the sales or end up as dog meat)
and most importantly - i liked him!
he was 13 when i got him, and he was retired at 21. it is now quite sad as i am toying with the idea of letting him go as some days, he does seem to struggle.
as to if i would do it again, i'd say yes, but i wouldnt pay over the odds for one (like i did!) and you have to consider the future, when the horse cant be ridden. I used to hack, show and do some jumping with mine before he was retired, jumping wise, i was always wary of doing too much with him due to the spavin, i found sharks cartlidge (spelling?) to be fab and helped him loads.
