An old suspensory injury? Apparently damaged racing last year, had the full box rest etc and vet says its fine but he shouldnt race again? Only looking to do sj and eventing - maybe affiliated if good enough

Any views appreciated :)

No I certainly would not. If he is unable to race I doubt very much that he would cope with SJ or eventing. Lets face it what you want to do with him is a million miles away from a quieter life!

If you are planning on eventing then I would certainly avoid a horse with a past injury, it can be very demmanding on horses and I would not want to risk it. If you were planning on low-level dressage and a bit of (low-level) jumping and hacking then I would say that it could be a possibility however if you want to do some serious competing and eventing then IMO it would be best to aviod the horse.

Absolutely not. I wouldn't buy a horse with any type of previous injury that may cause lameness in the future. If he can't race, i highly doubt he's going to be able to event

As the others have said - if it was for hacking/low level riding club type activities then I might do if everything else was perfect and the vet agreed that it was suitable for that, but for eventing I wouldn't risk it either x

My mums old horse had an old suspensory inury and he was fine. Never had a days lameness. Vet said he was fine to event and do SJ and BD on. He did say just to watch the ground he ran on though, no hard ground or deep ground but then you wouldn't want to run on that anyway.
My old horse did a check ligament badly and had a yr off when he was 7. He lasted untill 26 again not a days lameness and he evented, showjumped up to foxhunter and hunted for a full days hunting every week over the winter. You couldnt even tell he had a past tendon injury.
It depends I guess on the extent of the damage and also how much the horse is. Also some horses just seem tougher than others.

Definitely not to event, even sticking to unaff. There will be horses like Firewell describes, and all good to that if you already own the horse, but why would you go out and buy what is a big walking risk?

Firewall - a check ligament is a very minor injury and v rarely affects the future of the horse if given sufficient amount of time to heal. A suspensory ligament injury is a whole different ball game! Some come sound but they are usually minor injuries, the vast majority don't do so well.

I think the owner is being a bit unrealistic wanting money for this horse when people are giving away racing fit horses just because they aren't worth the training fees. If they ate offering it to you for nothing, fair enough, but you don't want to be spending money on it, you will need to keep all your cash in case the injury flares up again, as you will not get cover for it.

Agree with glenruby and misschaos . If it's your own horse that was sound and then injured himself, I would understand if someone wanted to spend the time to rehab and see if they come right, but buying yourself a horse that has already had such a serious injury just isn't worth the risk.

Hiya sorry for the late reply! He came sound after 6 weeks box rest and 6 weeks walking - has done an ode since but pretty much hacking and schooling. They are asking £500 as they need to sell him - said they wanted 1500 before!
