Unfortunately I don't know many details but my friend has been given the opportunity to purchase an ex racehorse that had an unsuccessful wind op, it can still be ridden just not raced.

Would the horse cost huge amounts to keep (with regards to the wind)?

Would my friend be able to sell the horse on in the future?

etc.

Any other opinions greatly received.

I had a horse with a soft palet but never had a op, she hacked and hunted with me and even done hunter trials and although sounded bad when in fast work never coursed her any issues. I sold her to the first person who viewed her and she was a chestnut mare!

in what way was it unsuccesful? as in , does it still just make a noise, or is there another, added, complication due to failed surgery?

as a dressage rider, wind noises/ops dont bother me at all-i had a huge (17.3hh) warmblood who made a noise and had he been destined to sj or event at top level, would have had a tie back op, it never affected him and he was sold on with no problems (to do a bit of low level everything), having competed to affil medium.

CS has been hobdayed and again this didnt bother me at all, he still makes a noise when galloping hard, and he cant neigh, best he can manage is a throaty fuffle, but other than that you really wouldnt know.

i tried a horse (when shopping and eventually bought CS) that made a very loud wind noise, like a pig grunting after smoking 50 a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!sounded horrendous but in no way affected his performance or breathing just doing dressage.

so, depends really on what horse is destined to do? eventers in particular will be more worried/suspicious of a wind noise, dressage riders least so IME.

Intersting question and tbh I don't know however, when mine was at the vets last week coming out of sedation she was snoring and the vet said "that's why she was no good at racing - she has a soft palate problem" apparently snoring is a sign ????

Saying that we've hunted, Team chased, xc'd etc etc with no problem. The only thing I would say is that when I'm getting her fit and upping the fast work she does sometimes have a little whistle that sounds like its coming from her nose, it never lasts and only happens 3 / 4 times for a few strides so never worried about it.

Depends on what your friend wants to do really so have a chat with the vet.

Thanks for the replies.

I think my friend would have been interested in eventing (low level 90/100) but apparently horse has never jumped before so not sure how that would go?! Horse has hunted though.

I will pass the info on, thanks again :)

chances are he will make a fine riding horse, but may make a bit of a noise. only advice i would give is NEVER take a horse who has had a hobday or tie back swimming.... you run the risk of drowning them unintentionally.
