So im going to beeston this week with my son and thinking of picking up a little'un to fill the whole our shetland left, I know im going to be mytherd to death!...

But with all these EHV worries on top of doping and all the other horror stories we all hear would you personally risk it?

I am not experienced so ill advised but I cant see why not. Buyer be very aware, personally after 9/10 private sellers porkies I cant see what the difference is really. Just be very streetwise. Good luck . I have only been to cambridge sales and do know folk who have picked up nice horses and also some nightmares! Let us know if you have success.

Am interested to know about vet ie on site if they will have a look or is it bought as seen?Deal done. At Cambs the vet is busy buzzing around checking with the stethoscope etc..doing as best as possible. Not sure if they are available for questions?Good luck hope you save a little soul.

Im not sure if beeston even have a vet tbh ive been a number of times but never noticed, have noticed the meat man though! Im going to set a budget and let my son choose I think, hes only 8 but hes more sensible, ide just buy a herd of the skinniest things there!
Very good point about private sellers im the guillable one they always see coming and twice ive bought totally blind anyway!

Yep we bought a mini there about 25 years ago he was that small we brought him back in the back of an old Ford Granada!!!!!!! Shocking i know. Lived to be in his 20s and passed away peacefully one spring morning in the paddock. If I rember rightly he cost about £15.

How do you get round the whole isolation thing? Never attempted to keep a horse on its own before, I do actually have a seperate section with stable at opposite end of field but my two are so bloody nosey and fiesty ide be expecting a few fireworks on both sides if they arnt allowed to mingle straight from the off! I dont want to risk them picking up a virus or anything so do agree with isolation with a market purchase.

rescue/pitty buys are always more rewarding arnt they!? :D

You really do need to isolate if buying from a sale. Not just EHV but there are a few outbreaks of strangles, it would be tragic to infect your other horses.

Also, not sure this is the best week to go to Beeston. The Red Lion closure has brought out all the various protest groups in force, all saying they will push the prices up. Could well be very unpleasant.

Preloved or (shock horror ) Dragon Driving might be better if you just want a cheap companion.

They do have a vet attend and has been staying there longer over the last few auctions. I think you will be fine purchasing just keep whatever u buy separate for two weeks. I have bought lots of youngsters from beeston over time and each of them have been great and gone on to do diff things successfully. I'll be there tomorrow good luck with your purchase although it will be mega busy being half term.

As lady's red says, you may find prices are stupid there at the mo. There seem to be a group determined to outbid everyone the last few weeks at Beeston, even tho they don't appear to have the facilities to care for them:(

I will definatly isolate if we get one and luckily have the facilities to do so but should I expect a nighmare with a very stressed out lonely pony for a few wks because mine will wind it up or am I just over thinking things?

I certainly wont be paying over the odds, so I hope those clue so called animal lovers dont jepordise many genuine homes for the sake of trying to prove a point :(

Amymay- Having just caught up on the other beeston thread I fear you may be right. Such a shame these people are aloud to ruin things for people and put these horses/ponies at greater risk of neglect.

Can beeston not ban these wretched people?

Beeston have no interest in banning anyone, as all that's happening in reality is that prices are being driven up - so it's win, win for them.

Give it a couple of weeks until things calm down, would be my advice.

Don't they just drive u mad!!!!! Shame u can't buy a pony tomorrow! They have been there the last two occasions though do you think they will give up?

They are mad! How can they seriously claim to have the horses bests intrests at heart when they are deliberatly outbidding genuine loving, experienced homes so they can let them live in squalour and starve to death!

Just to give some idea of the IQ we are dealing with here, the woman involved in leading this group has been insisting that she knows of a mare who can help a foal in need of a dam (as its dam died during the birth.....), thing is the mare she thinks could help is currently in foal. But surely the foal could have some of the milk before the dam's own foal is born????

Aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!
