would you buy?

My first question would be why does it need rebacking other than that it would depend on conformation temperament and if I thought it would do what I wanted. would not be looking to pay very much at all though as there are a lot of horses looking for homes that can get straight on with the job and not need money spending to get them there

No as it's not the kind of project I am interested in, but if it's the kind of thing you enjoy I would say buy him for a nominal sum, e.g. one pound (given the market, the time of year and the amount of time and effort you would need to put into re-baking and training I think that's fair).

If it were a keeper then it could be a good horse.

But if it was a project to sell on people would always be suspicious and it might not make as much as a younger backed horse.

No reason why it won't make a nice ridden horse though.
Providing as checks are done.

Yes but very much would depend on what I thought the end result would be & how long I thought it would take. And that would take into account confo, ability, temperament etc, & price.
To price a project I do as follows. How much would the same horse be as a ready made type, for arguments sake say 3k. How long, & therefore how much will it take to get it there? For arguments sake let's say 12mnths & 1k for all keep. Therefore anything under 2k works out cheaper than just buying the ready made version. But that doesn't include your time. Or the fact you could have an unexpected vets bill etc. I also tend to work out on a shorter timescale too. Eg what will it be worth in 3mnths, 6mnths etc. And tbh, to make it worthwhile, even using my example of it being worth 3k in a year, given the amount of time put in it would have to be peanuts to make it a better option than buying the ready made version. If however cost isn't an issue & its purely for the enjoyment, then it doesn't matter.

I would want to know why he needs re-backing, that particular term brings to mind that there's been a problem at some point and he's been turned away.

Not at that price no, plenty of unspoilt young horses at low prices and ridden horses selling cheaply at the moment.

I wouldn't buy. I got given a project very similar. The re-backing was fine but he's a 10 year old going on 3 mentally. Not tricky just very green, he's ended up being a gorgeous field ornament because at this time in my life I have no time for him. Maybe next year... he's no trouble. As others have said depends what you want to do with him. Even if he's really nice I probably wouldn't pay more than meat money

Would very much depend on price and whether it was something to train and sell or keep. With so much on the market for so little I'd be looking for around 3-400 to pay for what you describe?
