Ive ordered a saddle from a saddler, its supposed to be made to measure but is actually just going to be the standard medium fit that Ideal make so nothing special. Ive since had second thoughts and have decided to cancel but feel guilty as hes already come out to me once so i could try it and has now taken it away to adjust flocking (not much, just adding a tiny bit to raise the back)

It did feel nice to sit in but my horse bucked quite a bit and kept striking off on the wrong leg in canter (he never does this) Also its way above the price i wanted to spend and i felt like he pushed me into ordering it. Do you think im wrong to change my mind? all i really wanted was a nice but not too expensive second hand saddle but feel so unhappy now as this has turned into a nightmare

If its no good for your horse, send it back DEFINITELY!! Dont feel guilty, you dont want to be stuck with something which isn't any good.
I'm having saddle problems myself at the minute and have played hell with the company, they sold me an expensive saddle which is not suitable for my horse so i'm having them out tomorrow to have a new saddle sorted.

Has he made it for you?

Yes he has ordered it just for me as he only stocks well used demos (the one i tried was an 18" which was way too big and bounced at the back on my horses back) so you never really get a feel for the saddle unless you order one.

Nah if you aren't happy, I wouldn't buy the saddle.

Just to be sure - you haven't signed anything which legally says you are going to have it?

No i havent signed anything and never even got round to sending him the deposit! i guess i just feel guilty for changing my mind this late in the day!

Sounds as though your horse is telling you something here! Who is the saddler, are they well known?

[/ QUOTE ]

They were recommended to me but i wasnt to happy with him as i found him quite pushy and he didnt really asses my horse. Also he knows i really wanted a second hand saddle as ive already bought a dressage saddle from him (which fits like a glove and im very happy with it) and obviously i don't have pockets THAT deep.

Sorry I'm still not clear - ordered it as in off the peg, or ordered it to me made especially for you??

[/ QUOTE ]

Made especially for me but its just a standard medium with nothing special about it and no extras that would mean it couldnt be returned to the maker (ideal)

Ok, well unless you are really unhappy with it, think you may be stuck with it.

I think if you haven't given a deposit or signed anything, then you will be better to cancel it and get one you are truly happy with.

When I was in UK, I got a saddler to come out, he came with a van full of saddles and I tried countless before choosing one.
It was TDS Saddlers - very highly recommended.

Even if it was a saddle made to measure for your horse I'm pretty sure you can send it back if it doesn't fit... I know my friend did that with a jumping saddle not long ago and it wasn't a big deal - the horse wasn't happy in it so they took it back.

Sorry, but I'm going the other way here. It doesn't really matter whether you felt pressured into the decision... you still actually made it and confirmed the order. As (presumably) a small businessman, this saddler shouldn't have to suffer a loss because you weren't able to say no. His sales technique is irrelevant.

Of course, if the saddle hasn't actually been altered yet then he won't have lost anything other than a wasted trip to you... but it is still a bit cheeky imo to cancel at this stage.

If the saddle once altered does not fit/does not suit your horse etc. then you may be able to get a refund (possibly not 100% refund though) on the basis that his advice wasn't sound.

Just my thoughts, but I feel a bit sorry for the saddler here!

Surely if he bucked in it then it's not right!

Where are you based? We've got a great saddler....

I think it was the too big 18" that made the horse buck, the OP hasn't actually tried the one she ordered if I understand that right

No the bucking was with the one ordered for me.

In that case you may have a get-out if this still happens after reflocking..but if you really don't want/can't afford this saddle I would stop him before he messes around with it too much on your behalf
