Would you charge for this?

If we want to use the warm water at our yard to wash our horses it's £3.50.
Certainly doesn't seem to put people off.

I would say price up a canister of gas, split it by however many people want to use it and say you will happily let them use it if they chip in for gas. And if any parts get damaged on the shower they are replaced immediately

On most yards I've ever been on the damage would not be known about until the first person to try to use it finds it won't work.

I wouldn't loan it out. I rarely loan anything out.

They will resent paying, in all likelihood. Then it will get broken and put away is if it were not broken, in all likelihood.

But, if you are accepting payment for its use then the dratted thing burns someone, they may come after you for damages. People do.

I have my own stuff that I use for myself.

Sorry.

I have a gas hot shower. I definitely wouldn't let anyone use it unless maybe it was permanently rigged up for use. You can connect the hoses thewrong way round, not connect them properly, if there was a fire through their misuse would you be liable? And from my own experience the biggest risk of damage is when you move it to set it up. I guess if you have a 'proper' trolley there is less risk. These showers don't last forever and if its stops working you will be upset. I might let people use it when I was there to set it up and charge them at least £1.

Can I ask what brand it is? I need something like this!

This 👆 is the one I have @SEL .

I also have mine on a trolley similar to what is pictured with this water heater: https://www.horseandhound.com.au/in...rtable-hot-water-system/category_pathway-2105

Definitely find it much easier, and safer, to have it on that and be able to move everything around as one piece. It's really helpful for if you wanted to take it to a show aswell, that way you don't have to worry about finding somewhere safe to hook the heater up out the way. Not sure where you would need to look to buy a trolley like that from though, my Grandad made the one I have mine on.

Ours is fixed onto a sack trolley. And usage is booked through the yard (slightly different case obviously) so it's easy to trace who used it when.

If its constant people at the yard can you have a list of who uses it and how many times (including yourself) and when you buy a new canister split the cost between times used? That might be the fairest way! I'm not sure if it might get complicated though...
That seems very fair.

I might let people I trust use it while I was there, but I would hope they would give something/return the favour seeing as they are using a consumable.

I would definitely be charging and certainly more than £1! I used to let people use mine and the gas does not last long when 3 or 4 people are using it if people are wanting to use it regularly like every week. And it is annoying when you do go to use it and the gas runs out😫 There is also wear and tear on the boiler itself. Personally I think £5 is fair for a full bath, £2.50 if it’s just legs/tail.

I would not let anyone use it as it will get damaged and no one will own up.
You've paid for a shower for your horse , why should you let others use it for peanuts and not worry about damaging it?
I've yet to meet a horsey person who owns up and offers to pay for damages.
So I'd just say "sorry but I can't risk it getting damaged so I'd rather not share it"

I would not let anyone use it... maybe 1 close friend.
We used to have a Hippo Horse Shower at the yard. YO bought it and it was fantastic but, it got broken after 4 months. Nobody would own up to it so YO had it mended then kept it for her own personal use only.
I really can't blame her, people just don't care about other people's property.

Don't let anyone use it.

I wouldn’t tbh. It would get too complicated and even broken. A polite sorry but I’d rather not. I wouldn’t dream of asking anyone to borrow anything so expensive.

I loaned a mate my almost new energiser and she broke it and put it back with my stuff without saying a word. Never again.

'Complicated' I think is the operable word.

Once you start letting someone use it for a pound, most might want to use it. One pound is a good price - anyone would love that. Suddenly people start interrupting you to be on hand (if that is the deal) or ranting about something. Then someone nearly burns down the yard. Ooops. If you are not already grey it might be the very thing that sends you grey.

Absolutely charge, gas is so expensive. I guess you need to try and work out how much a canister costs and how long it lasts you generally. Until then, charge what you like. Id happily pay £2 a go if it were me. Just be careful nobody breaks it... because then what... you're totally out of pocket.

Lent a trailer to a friend of the family once (for free), their pony ate all the rubber off the breast bar. They never offered to pay, just vaguely apologised but didnt seem bothered or embarrassed at all. Some people genuinely dont seem to care if they damage other peoples stuff.

God, starting to think I should never lend anything out should I ever have anything to lend. If I were borrowing I’d either not for fear of it breaking or make sure I could pay if something went array! I just assumed others did the same.

If you rent a campervan for a short period you can weight the gas canister at the start and end of the rental and work out how much it used.

If you weigh the tank empty, then fill it and weigh it full (you'll then know how much it costs per kgs) you could then wash yours and work out how much a wash is.

But also wear and tear, and damage risk should also be considered. For £1 you might have the whole yard lined up !
