would you clip a young pony on vets reconmendations?

Well the story starts with the vet coming today to give my rising three year old a flu and tet jab.
I decided to ask her advice on what i should do about his sweetitch so that i can manage it better this year.
So, she said its best to put his boett rug on february time to make sure the midges dont bite him, but this is where my problem comes from...
My pony is your typical good doer native with the thickest dense fur i have ever come accross and everyone on the yard agrees.
He likes to keep his thick coat until late spring (until hes certain its not going to get cold!)

He's unrugged all winter and i was worried that have a rug ontop of his greasy, dirty, thick winter coat will cause him discomfort and maybe cause him to get more skin problems/ itch more.
My vet said i should clip him and that this wouldn't cause a problem for him and make him feel more comfortable.

I was just wanting to know some others opinions on this and whether i should clip him in early february time as my vet suggests before putting his boett rug on?

dpends on the weather and temps!! i would think end of march is as soon as you want to get the boett on!! watch the temperatures as soon as it is consistently above 6 to 7 degrees (when the grass starts to grow) you need to geet the boett on. they are breathable so he should cope without clipping!! when nice again i would give him a good bath to get rid of winter grease and smells and extra friends!!
 
I would be tempted to clip him now and rug him up and possibly do it again in the spring rather than whipping every thing off in one go and only giving him the Boett. With less hair he may be less itchy anyway.
 
i'd clip him now...just to get him used to the rug if he isnt normally rugged
....but sweetitch is a midge bite problem so keep an eye on the temperature's.
its only when they spike to above 10 degree's celcius that the feckers start to reemerge and become a problem...so he needs rugging before temperatures hit this point and when this time is vary's from year to year
 
I'm with the clip him now and rug him peeps so you can get the Boett on as soon as it is possibly needed. You can always put another rug on top of the Boett if he's cold but the midges are out.

so if i clip him now, how should i go about it? should he have everything off his body and neck?
This will be his first clip so im a bit causious about how i go about it

try a product called stop-it-all. its fantastic for everything...sweetitch, mud fever, rainscald, cuts and scrapes, etc. you can even diute it and use a fly spray. look it up on the net....i have a pony that suffers really badly with sweetitch. i used this from feb last year and managed to do a whole year of shows with a full mane and tail...fabulous x
