hello all! there seems to be alot of bad press about unreliabe sharers on here and i just wondered whether you would ever consider moving your horse for the benefit of having a good sharer. I lost my lovely mare last week and rather than get another horse of my own was thinking about becoming someones sharer, the only trouble is that the horse would have to come to my livery which is just a small yard but with great hacking and a grass school, good size stable and daily allyear turnout. i would be on hand to do as much or as little as the owner required in return for a couple of rides a week. would this appeal to you?

I wouldn't think many would want to do this for a share unless they really didn't like where they were and really liked what you were offering and was a similar price etc. It's more likely to be possible on a full loan with a contract I would of thought but you might be lucky.

Would they be paying to livery on your yard? Do you own it?

I'd have thought someone might take a cheap livery deal that allowed the YO to ride a bit, but be aware a lot of people would worry about you taking over control of the horse.

I think if the horse/owner was not happy at their yard and looking to move anyway.....and if they liked your yard, then possibly. Obviously aswell depends on the right distance/location for the owner to work/home etc facilites of the yard what owner wants etc?

What are you offering, free livery? As stated above some owners may worry about you taking over control if the horse is kept on your yard.

If it were mine then no.

I think you would need to be very lucky to find the sort of situation where an owner would do that, and that is practical distance and facilties wise for the owners too. Things could get a bit difficult if owner/horse did not like or settle on your yard, or if the share did not work out. Owner & horse would want to leave but may not be able to go back to where they were previously.

Good luck!

No it wouldnt.

The horse will be on a yard that is conveniant for the owner and has the facilities the owner wants, Your yard doesnt sound appealing due to the lack of facilitied perticularly the lack of a proper arena.

my yard wouldn't suit everyone, probably more ideal for happy hackers who value daily turnout and a small friendly yard over a great arena but they would vet the yard first so would only come to me if the place suited their needs. I totally see what you mean about me taking over their horse but i work long hours so i wouldn't want to do that. i would be contributing to horses upkeep and also helping with turnout, mucking out etc as and when needed. when so many people are short of time and finances i thought this would be an appealing offer but that the moving to me would be an issue!

Sorry about your mare op.

Tbh, I would be pretty doubtful people would want to move their horse for a sharer. As a sharer myself, it wouldn't have crossed my mind that an owner would move their horse to a yard of my choice. You may be lucky and find someone who is possibly looking to move anyway, but I would imagine they would want to ensure the share was going to work out before uprooting their horse to your yard.

If you don't mind me asking, why would you be looking for this sort of arrangement? Just out of interest.

thankyou it was for the best and i'm glad she is not in pain anymore. reason i'm thinking of going this route is that although i luv looking after horses, timewise i can only ride 2 or 3 times a week. I am scared of getting an older horse that that amount of riding would suit incase the hills here made them worse with arthritis. but a younger horse would need more riding out which i can't do if that makes sense. I thought this option would mean i would be able to have a younger one that could cope better with the terain here. If i didn't have my own yard i would never expect an owner to move for my benefit

I would consider this, if someone had the right setup close enough to me. I did in fact consider it some time ago, when I was looking at a yard move anyway, and had a potential sharer that lived quite close to me and the option of a livery yard (not her own) that would have suited both of us quite well. However, I am not sure that I would feel completely comfortable moving to a sharer's yard unless I trusted them very well - if the share went wrong or I decided that I didn't want them to share any more, I would then have to move the horse rather than just end the share.

As PaddyMonty said - maybe better to get your own horse and have a sharer (and be in a bit more control).

yes, that might be the answer then and hopefully i will be able to find a reliable sensible sharer. Thanks for your opinions once again x
