A 3yo, backed only a few months for someone who's exeperienced but lost their confidence. I think it's too young although owner says he's worth a look because he's a saint. He looks lovely on photos but I think it's a lot to ask a 3yo to help regain someones confidence.

Any opinions or experiences of buying youngster for novice or rider who's lost confidence?

Thanks

Definetly not - and I'm talking from experience. You never know with youngsters, and if confidence is already an issue I think its much better to go for something that will build confidence. After all, taking baby to 1st show, 1st of many things does need a lot of confidence x

I would consider it, but consider it VERY carefully. I have known three year olds who would do the job perfectly, and 20 year olds who wouldn't at all, so it is possible, but it depends on the horse, just how nervous the owner is, and things like that.

No. the 3 year old may well do the job but your friend will have a niggle worrying about how the new horse will cope with the next new experience. Much much better for her to try out a horse with a good reputation - and in full work NOT one that is quiet because it is unfit!. Loss of confidence starts first and foremast from the brain so your friend will want to be on something with no questions on it.

No definitely not. If your friend has lost her/his confidence they would be better going for lessons and going out on hacks from a riding school who have a little more than plods if she if experienced. Or start on a plod and progress.

no way...your friend needs a confidence giver- IMO baby horses need a rider to give THEM confidence. horse might seem ok now with a confident rider but a nervous rider could cause all sorts of problems

I would say it depends on the individual horse.
I rode a horse over the summer who was a saint of a creature. He'd been backed at 3 and only ever ridden by complete novices and yes ok he was in a mess to start with in as much as when I started riding him when he was 5 he was still very very green, but he looked after everyone that rode him and was more sensible/trainable than my 13 year old.
With the right help and support around for your friend it could be possible for it to work out right.
Depends on how honest you feel the owner has been- whether they are saying it is good for a 3 year old just to get you to look, hope you like it and buy anyway or if they truly have one of those good uns.
