Are there people out there that would do a straight swap? someone who has had a horse got there confidence back or learnt to ride on and now wants something with a bit more ooph and go further with, would they be interested in a swap? i would prefer to do this rather than sell as i can find the best home for him and rehome at the same time so we both know what were getting and where our horses are and can keep in touch? what do you think? x

I think if it is going to work it is something that has to find you, rather than the other way round. What I mean is, really it needs to be a horse you know and like, and an owner you know and trust, I don't think it would work well with a strangers horse unless you re very lucky.

its a nice thought, but my worry is that it would be very hard to find 2 people willing to swap where the horses will both be exactly what the other people are wanting.

I think its a possibility but you would have to be sure both people involved are totally happy and a possibility one not likely to change their mind!
Could get messy!

Two of my friends did it very sucessfully, one had a TB mare - nice stamp but a little more than she wanted/ needed for her hacking. Other friend had a lovely irish gelding that had jumped himself into too much BSJA money and was finding starting at the level he was allowed to pretty tough - he could take or leave competing.
They knew each other well anyway (the suggestion came up as a joke in the pub!), tried and likes each others so straight swap it was. Both were very happy in their new homes, gelding had a slightly slower pace of life as happy hacker with the odd sponcered ride/ hunting and mare got out and about lots (and calmed down when in hard work!)

Not easy to do/ find but certainly possible.
