I really would like opinions on this please, my mare has had a bursitis on her poll for a while now and i've read they can rupture and the fluid come out- and an option is to have it surgically drained- would you do this if you were in my shoes? i also feel it affects her flexibility and movement a little (not majorly) in flexing her head, so i think she would be more comfortable without it. And of course in the instance of selling her she would sell a lot better without a blemish. But then there is risk of infection- if i had it done it would be after the fly season i suppose and after the show season.

here is a picture..

you can see behind the poll, where the fluid is in the bursa.

thankyou

What a pretty little mare! Draining it surely would be by needle and syringe,so anytime will do..maybe they would then inject a steroid shot in the "space" as they do in aural haemotomas in dogs.No big deal,I`d go for it.

I'd definitely have it done ifyour vet thinks it will stay away and not refill. The infection risk is tiny, vets drain bursae from tendon and ligament strains and knee knocks all the time.

thankyou for your replies, i think i will go for it if i get similar opinions from a couple of vets, and yes she is a pretty mare and well put together so it is a shame for it to spoil her really, i would like to sort it now so she can develop correctly over her years! (she is 7 now btw). If i do i will post pics etc on here to show the process =]
