to ask (very, very politely) if you could use a field or theirs for riding in?

We have excellent forest hacking due to Hemsted forest being on our doorstep, but there is a house at the end of the road with the most wonderful, massive meadow that is just asking to be galloped in!

Would it be out of order to send them a letter or something, just asking if it would be possible to ride in it? How would you feel if it was your (unused) field?

I dont see anything wrong in writing a polite letter. If you dont ask you dont get. Make sure you mention that you would respect the ground and not ride when wet, etc

I was thinking of knocking but then I thought it might appear quite invasive....although I would get an answer quick enough...

Truffles, I would have no problem at all with any polite approach - I'd probaby be very grateful that someone had taken the trouble to ask rather than just help themselves!!

A friend went and asked a farmer about us going in his stubble, he said yes

We had fun until it was ploughed yesterday, but really kind of him to let us

I would knock on the door and ask nicely. Trouble nowadays is everyone is so so busy they may not get around to answering a letter

Also people are always worried about stuff in writing in case somehow you can later sue them

I would knock on the door and say something like 'Hi, sorry to bother you, I'm a local horse owner, I keep my horse at blah blah blah. I was wondering if you might consider giving me permission to ride round the edge of your field occasionally (smile loads at this point) it's just me, not hundreds of riders. It WOULD just be now and again, not all the time, it's just that my horse needs a good workout and there are so few places around here to do it...'

Smile loads, keep it light, don't take it badly if they say no, but if they say yes be suitably grateful and buy them a bottle of port at Christmas. Good luck!!
