Would you expect to pay for a retired companion pony?

I have been offered a few horse sized companions for free but there size and age puts me off. I know that sounds weird perhaps? But i don't really want to be the one to make a pts decision on your old horse when its time comes (assuming that's not too far in the future!) its put me off along with caring for an older horse and the costs that can come with that (not saying i wont care for my boy in his old age). I also came to my senses about getting a youngster for those who saw my thread.

Ones i have thought might be suitable (around 14h, able to lead out on hacks occasionally and must be sane left alone (individual turnout) whilst i hack) they have wanted to sell me and im not paying for a companion. I like the idea of them paying me though so i might offer retirement livery instead!

I’m potentially looking for a companion home for an older small pony, but I have huge trust issues with who has him and would want to retain ownership solely to give him a certain future- I wouldn’t expect to lease him though! ?? it’s enough that I don’t have to pay livery for him!
katastrophykat whereabouts are you as I am looking for a companion pony to join my 3 on a private yard

Thankyou all for your input. I have contacted Blue Cross and applied for one of their ponies. Some big charities don't rehome out of their area( bramsby) and I see that their rehoming fees are really cheap compared to what I payed for my recent companion ?. Anyway, I am going to look at 2 on Wed and I have also spoken to the owner of mel's old field mate who at 26 is ready to retire which would work out a great option all round as I already know her well and so does my ridden mare. My plan of getting a Shetland has unfortunately gone out of the window ?
