Would you feed this to your dog?

I'd rather feed a fresh raw ham bone - have you a butcher you can ask? Mine will keep them aside for me if I ask nicely as they sell sliced ham and have to bone out the joints before cooking. They're as tough as all hell though, a (raw) chicken carcass or some lamb ribs etc might be better, depending on the size of the dog. :)

I wouldn't feed then and don't allow them with boarders. Any roasted bone is a splinter risk.

The bone from a boiled ham is ok as are most raw bones. I currently have most of the bones from a recently slaughtered heifer in a freezer. I saw bits off at sizes to suit the dogs and give them raw. Thin rings from leg bones are great for tiny dogs -my borzoi or the welfare bassets get half pelvises.
Practically any dog can have sawn ribs.

That's what I thought re cooked bones, just wanted peeps opinions.

We do have a local butcher but I can't generally get there when he's open unless I'm working from home. But could pop in on Sat morning if I get chance. Otherwise I might have to raid Sainsbury's for something suitable :-)

He's a Border Collie by the way so am assuming he could have a reasonably large bone.

No never cooked and never raw bones near "dog food".

Boys had a treat tonight from Waitrose! They did a whole rack of raw pork ribs for £3.50 with quite a bit of meat on them, 1/2 each and I didn't see them for 15 mins!!

Waiting for the farts but nothing yet, so it must be just the trotters that do that!

There are a lot of treats appearing in the pet shops like human food but dodgier, I just get biltong or pepperami instead, and it's cheaper!!

Something similar ended up costing me £700 in surgery for my JRT, he had a belly full of splintered bits. I was lucky not to lose him, vet said cooked bones are the worst thing ever invented.

Right, this post has confirmed everything I thought so shopping yesterday I bought a pack of chicken thighs (he hasn't had raw before so will try him on something fairly small first) and also bought a big Turkey Drumstick - thanks CaveCanem for that tip :-)

KarynK - my OH is South African so Biltong has got as much chance of reaching the dog as I have of winning an Olympic medal!! ;-)

He does have dry food but I won't mix the two and will save the drumstick for next weekend I think when we are around all day to keep an eye on him.

Poor dog!! Having to watch biltong being eaten. What are the odds of that, don't tell the OH but I bought it for me and hated the stuff, dog's didn't so I started getting it for them.

Good way to start with the drumsticks, the turkey legs even keep mine quite for a while! Lamb bones are quite good too as they are nowhere near as hard as the beef, you can buy the breast of lamb for a very good price and likewise pork ribs, so there's plenty of variety out there. If you have a Morrisons near they are great for stocking cheaper cuts, they have a stock pack of lamb bones for under a £1 and do lambs hearts as well that give them a good chew and clean an polish the teeth too.

Dogs are so lucky not having to floss or use them inter dental things they can eat their teeth clean!!!!!

My JRT in not so daft then, was at a BBQ today and the little darling managed to nick a chicken dumstick and a shish kabab, but she came to us to let us take the meat off them, and a good day was had by all.
