Not me but a friend looking to get another collie from the same litter as the one they have already, only pup left is deaf tho? thoughts please. thanks
They will need to begin training at an early stage so that it understands hand signals and is very strongly focused on its' owner/handler.
Would maybe seek help from someone with experience in this field as it can be quite tricky.
It shouldn't be a problem, sign language works really well for dogs and you can test later to see how profoundly deaf it is, maybe it can hear a dog whistle? If the other isnt deaf then the deaf one can use the other pups' reactions to help him out, like when they can't see you and you call etc.
The only problem is is dangerous situations when a car, tractor, etc is coming and they are unaware, this is why it will become a tad dependent on another dog, or you, and might need it to be on a lead in certain situations. We have had two deaf dogs, one completely deaf, was very clever at looking away if she didn't want to see you telling her to come here, and to stop chasing a rabbit! The other could hear high frequency sound and was like a normal dog. I agree, training is the key here.
Best of luck.
Yes, the only proviso I was going to put in was that they have another dog living with them, but if two are coming from the same litter then I don't see it being a major issue.
I wouldn't hve two puppies out of the same litter/at the same time anyway, they can become dependant on each other and not give two hoots about anyone else.
Personally Iwouldn't have a deaf dog. Purely because I don't think I have the patience to train one, it's bad enough trying to train one that merely feigns deafness!
