Grrr, my lesson was cancelled last Sat due to horrible weather, and today I had to cancel my lesson because beastie has a hot and swollen right hind. Shes not lame at all, and has put full weight on it and rested the other leg! Anyway I was in two minds whether to have the lesson or not, but cancelled in the end - the reason I was in two minds was because she came in a little swollen last night- this morning having been stabled it doubled in size then reduced again once turned out- sometimes these injuries need the blood to flow round to help healing. There is no wound and the swelling is to the front of the leg, like a raised lump (kind of reminds me of a bruise) I cold hosed then put on some ice tight and she will go out tomorrow. But would you have ridden her? or done anything different?

I wouldn't of ridden as the lump was hot. If it had just been filled legs then I would of ridden.
I would of done the same re the cold hosing and turn out though.

I wouldn't have done....If it had just been filled legs I'd probably taken the horse for a walk inhand, to see if that helped.

Why would you go for a hack - so suddenly when your horse becames really really sore you are 3 miles away from home?

Definitely wouldn't have ridden either, you definitely did the right thing. Fingers crossed all is well for your clinic next month.

Not only would I not ride - I'd be getting the vet out!

swolen legs usualy do well if horse is turned out. horses are not ment to be kept in stables. you should get the vet out to see the leg it could be infected.
