I am looking at two young horses worth about 1500 each both unbroken ,both bred to event would you have these vetted or take your chance??

If they're seriously 'bred to event' and being sold for £1,500 - even as foals - I'd CERTAINLY get them vetted as they're too cheap! SO, either the seller doesn't have a clue what they cost to produce, OR seller knows there's something wrong with them, OR seller has 5 horses to the acre with winter coming up!!

On paper they appear to be a bit of a bargain by mill law and mcguigan , 3 and 4 years old, unbroken and standing at 16.2hh and17hh. Reason for sale is that ownerhas had hip replacements and cannot cope.Obviously might go to see them and they are complete no hopers with three legs!! Just interested what peoples views were as my yard was a bit divided over the vetting topic . My inclination is to have them vetted as I belive my insurance company requires it and also as they are only a project I would like to be able to state they have been vetted but other peoples opinions have been that because they are young, under a certain price , i will only have them for a short spce of time not to bother.

If you buy one and it turns out they have something terribly wrong with them, you will be stuck with it, costs the same to keep a good horse as it does to keep a bad one and all that........

I would never buy a horse without having it vetted, specially if it is coming to a yard where there are other horses. You could be bringing a horse with something contagious that you might not have spotted when you went to try them.

How much will the vetting cost?

Does your vet know what he is doing?

They do sound cheap but there are lots of bargains to be had out there.and we are not far off winter and many people are thinking that way.....actually, I think all this hype about the credit crunch and the onset of winter make it a great time to pick up some really good horses at very good prices.

Best horse I ever bought is a TB mare I paid £400 for...4 years old and I didn't bother to get her vetted. She is now 10 years old but even so, was unbelievably cheap even then.
